Man Allegedly Offers Cop $1,000 For Friend's Release
Driver, Passenger Taken Into Police Custody
NASHUA, N.H., 10:27 a.m. EDT July 26, 2001 -- A 20-year-old New York man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly trying to bribe a Nashua police officer.
Brett Thomas was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over in the early morning after the driver went through a red light.
According to police, the driver was intoxicated and was arrested. Thomas then offered to give the officer $1,000 in cash, in exchange for his friend's release.
"He approached the officer, asking if there was something that could be done," Lt. Donald Campbell said. "He was making a gesture with his hands, rubbing his fingers together, indicative of a money-type gesture.
"The officer told him, 'That's borderline bribery. Why don't you have a seat in the vehicle.' The response to that was to actually produce cash."
Both Thomas and the driver were taken into police custody.

The defensive firearm is a special-purpose piece of safety rescue equipment, designed to extricate a person . . . from the immediate threat of savagely violent crime. It is like the fire extinguisher. . . . Neither piece of equipment will do you any good if you don't know how to use it or are not psychologically prepared to face danger with that gear in your trained hands in a terror situation.
