There is a 1971 Browning Hi Power that has black grips instead of the wood ones. I am wondering if they are replacements. Also what year did the spur hammer begin to appear and what originally came with the Hi Power like pouch, box.

Not the least bit unusual. Some Hi Powers came from the factory with 'standard' black plastic grips. Often these H-P's were military/government contract pistols, though many made their way into the 'commercial' market as well. More photos of the reverse/ejector side of the pistol, with the serial numbering might help to better resolve which your pistol is. In any event...that's a nice lookin' pistol.
