45 acp Small Primer Brass

Picked up a bit of .45 ACP range brass today, tumbled it, and went to load it...then realized those IDIOTS at Federal has produced .45ACP Ammo with SMALL PISTOL PRIMERS!! Unbelievable...I plan to write to Federal and will not buy another Federal product until they withdraw this ammo from the market. Its going to wreak havoc for those of us that reload .45ACP. Try sorting this stuff out of regular .45ACP brass...

If they are trying to save money...load up aluminum cases (ala Blazer). Sheesh

Once upon a time I decided to research loads using small primer 45ACP brass, so I loaded all my 45 SUPER into small primer brass! Why not? What better way to differentiate Super loads from ACP loads in the absence of shelling out the vig for branded "SUPER" brass that's really no different than ACP?
I soon found out that small primers have very thin cups - around 0.17" compared to the massive thickness of large primer cups. In fact, small primers are completely wasted by 40,000psi and start blowing like Moby Dick flopping around on the Pequod! And that was just around 30K psi from the large volume 45ACP case. I learned a lesson, no more Super loads using piddling primers that's for sure!
Meanwhile my 460 Rowland loads using large primers just roll along like they're not even stressed!
Just out of curiosity, did you try any small RIFLE primers in your .45 Super loads? Remington 7.5s have harder cups (Remington used them in .357 Maximum loads) and that might have solved your issue, most cartridges using 7.5s are pretty high pressure items, after all............................................

I keep some on hand incase a day comes and I can't get LPP.
Yesssss......🙌
Speaking of "Chrony" - does anyone know who they sold out to or who supports them now that the company is belly-up like a New Jersey whale?

Sure….I can help you out, but I’m not sure that your sizing die can iron out the hammer marks..😆

Small primers are ok. I load smprimer .45 with 6 gr of CFE. Works fine.

That’s with Berry’s 230 g TMJ.
Large primers are really hard to find for me. For some reason small primers are easier to get.

The functionality is not in question. For those of us that load on a progressive, they can be a pain in the ass. A few sneak by and “Whack”, you are in a rhythm and just tried to shove a large primer in a stupidly small hole. The worst part is that there is no reason for the madness. 😡

Of course there is a reason: it's bad enough my rifle requires LARGE primers, my pistols don't! ;-)

Obviously, en-gi-neers dun figger'd it out!
If you like free range brass, sort it. If you fire factory ammo and want to reload the brass, buy large primer ammo. If the manufacturer or vendor doesn't disclose the primer size of the particular ammo, let the buyer beware. Is it an infuriating pain in the a..? YES.

Just whining?

Sure, it's OK if the ammo companies want to start putting out Small primer .45's.

Then I'm sure the rest of you would be OK with Large primer 9mm, .38 special, .357 and .40.

We can offer both types of brass from everything from .454 Casull to .32.

That will make the reloading process easier.:barf:

It's about setting up your reloader to do one thing and then the ammo companies change that to something else.
At one time 357 was large primer, and we all adapted to the change...

Yep. Last night I sized and primed a batch of 10mm. Found 3 with small primers. I just
put them in a different spot, when I get enough I will reload them. I look at every case I reload anyway, to make sure there are no splits or wear issues, so not much of a problem.

I load lots of 400 Corbon. I load about half that are from converted 45 acp cases, I also have 300 SPP factory cases from Starline. The 400 was a LPP round until 2000, then it switched to hop SSP primers or small rifle primers.

To help keep them separate, when I have bought the new ones, I get the nickel ones, not sure they still sell them now due to the high production they are facing, but I love the nickel, if I can get it. I also use nickel cases for my hottest loads, that way I know if it is a 550 fpe round or a 675 fpe round.

Small primer .45 ACP is the secret .45 Super brass. Holds up well for. 255gr @ 1,150 fps loads

Actually I seek out and buy 45acp brass with small pistol primers ( federal and blazer brass).
Small pistol primers are almost always available from Midway and others. Large pistol primers are very hard to get. Does anyone know of any other small primer brass?

Where are you getting SPP brass in the Super? Starline does not make it. I thought the reinforced web with the bigger primer was the safest design. They went through that same analysis with the 400 Corbon and the 10mm and I think decided that the LPP was better overall for the 10mm and all of the 45s but went to a rifle primer for the unique issues with the bottleneck 400.. They did the same with the 45 acp Plus P and decided to stay with the LPP> And I thought both Underwood and Buffalo Bore used the LPP for their 45 Supper ammo? Just curios.

S&B dumps some out and I think Fletch mentioned another that he ran across. The randomness is totally someone’s idea of a bad joke! 😡
