550 Failsafe Rod

Weird question..
Apparently, there was a disturbance in the force yesterday. Whilst loading up some 9mm, I noticed that I put the powder failsafe rod on the drop unit from right to left as opposed to the way shown in the directions, left to right. Dont ask how or why....it was really strange that I did that in the first place! Anyway, after discovery, I ran about ten loads, checked the function and everything was fine. Does it really matter?? Aside from the little bent top of the arm barely contacting the powder unit, I cant see any difference in function. Either way, the unit operates off the horizontal section of the rod. Didnt know if anyone else had done this.....🤷‍♂️

I think that depends mostly on the amount of wear on your particular machine... In theory, left to right won't drag. (or not as much) If reversed, the rod end can drag on the slot side, causing inconsistent action.

If installed Left to Right, the 90 degree bended portion rides in the slot, as opposed to the elbow dragging on the edges of the slot.
Well, the plan is to not do that again!!
I wanted to make sure the load didn't get messed with and it seemed to function fine.
Hmmm, I wonder how many folks I made go to their loading room and check theirs!!😁

My pre B 550 just used springs on the powder bar, and it worked fine.

Now, all mine have the fail safe linkage.
There for a reason I guess!
In our experience, trying to use the powder measure with the failsafe rod installed backwards, the failsafe rod will bind, and not fully retract.

It absolutely matters!, I had a real hair pulling time! when I set mine up!!
The short end of the rod can slip into the slot on the arm and BIND! it up!
I finally figured it out by looking at the pictures in the instruction manual, installed it from the other side and have had 0 issues since.

i could not get the failsafe rod to work properly, installed properly, on my 750.

a heat and bend really helped. The S bend just seemed too much like a “lazy S”. Took a round file to it too.

Thank you for that. When I noticed the screw up, I ran quite a few cycles to make sure of full travel. I did make sure the rod was completely vertical. Odd that I did not experience any binding and charges remained constant through normal checking. Like I said, I won’t do that again…🤓
