I am flying in a couple of days to Kansas that has reciprocity with Arizona, although the tickets were super cheap ($40.00 each way Mesa Az.- Wichita), they charge $40.00 for any checked luggage. That ends up being an $80.00 fee if I want to pack my gun, or knife...since it is only a four day trip, that works out to $20.00 a day to carry.

Fed-exing my gun to the hotel would cost about the same, and I really don't like having a gun floating around out there unless it is on it's way to a Smith or the factory.

I hate making a tradeoff when it comes to personal security, but for this price it was too good to pass up...

Maybe I will buy a crossman air pistol and coat the bbs in pepper spray when I get there....:biglaugh:

When I was living part time in TX and part time in NY I kept a couple guns in a safe in each state. that worked out well for me for the most part but one trip to NYI brought two guns on the plane and almost had them stolen.

They were legally checked in and tagged but someone broke the suit case lock expecting to find guns inside. But what they found inside was a very large sturdy case with locks that were a lot harder to break than regular suitcase locks. Trust me on this when I say gat a large box that is so big it can't be hidden under a coat and locks that would require bolt cutters or a hack saw to open. Putting the box inside a suitcase provides extra security.

If you visit there often maybe you can just leave a spare gun in kansas, or maybe if you are visiting family you can borrow a gun to carry. Or maybe you can buy a family member a gun and borrow the gun while you visit them

PS now a days I do all my traveling by truck because it makes it easier with guns and I now own two dogs

Doesn't both FEDEX and UPS have rules, and the ATF as well, that you must disclose the fact you are shipping a firearm, and the shipping company's have policy's stating that firearms must be shipped overnight? The question is, will FEDEX or UPS ship interstate to a non licensee? Even though he owns the guns he shipped to himself?

From the BATF website:

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

Q: May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?
Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

LOL, I guess I just answered the question lol, you can indeed ship to yourself as long as you have lawful intentions.

Obviously your carry-on is a no no but you can legally put in checked through luggage. Put your weapon in a lockable hard case and seperate it from your ammunition. When you get to the desk you need to immediatly declare that you have a firearm in your luggage. Some airports will have you sign a little red tag that it is unloaded. Others will have you open the case, verify that it unloaded and then have you sign the tag. Still others may require that ig goes through X ray prior to being put back into your bag. In all cases it must be seperate from your other stuff and in a locked hard case w/ no ammo anywhere near it.

Actually you can have ammo near it, locked in the same box. The gun must not be loaded. Unless they changed the rules since 2008, when I flew with my P99.

Yes, that does hurt. I experienced the same issue flying to the east side of Kansas on American. As I recall, bringing a separate bag just to hold my gun, cost $20 or $30 each way. Recently, Southwest stopped charging that fee, so they will get my business on the next trip.

But, given the flight is so cheap, I would celebrate getting to Wichita with a low overall cost. And you've got to bring your gun. Kansas has really shown up in support of our rights to self defense.

Read the OP. This is about cost, not method.
+1
Thanks.

Southwest has never charged for a single checked bag, not sure what their policy was on multiple...I travel fairly light.

I don't travel all that much so my opinion is a little skewed. But is your life worth $80? I know mine is......
Actually I'm worth more dead...

This begs the question I have had in my head for sometime now.....does anyone who frequently travels have a "beater gun" they use to check on flights?

I would be very hesitant to check my Kimber Ultra on a plane.....and if I traveled to a state with reciprocity I would consider using a cheaper beater gun instead of my main rig.

Anyone do this?

My Taurus Millenium Pro (Roscoe) has logged enough miles that he should be able fly free in first class.:biglaugh:

Yeah, the new checked bag fees suck. On June 1st I flew to Houston and returned the next day, I was charged $25 each way for my checked bag which I really only needed for my my gun/ammo/knife, $50 for an over night trip!! Of course, I'd rather not have had to pay but I won't go without so I accept it as part of the cost of carrying.

I'll only take a Glock on flights. Cheap and easy enough to replace should worst case happen, and no sentimental value.
More expensive and custom guns stay at home in the safe.

The bold part of your post is not completely accurate. It is Federal law that you fill out and sign a declaration card that states the firearm is unloaded. It is not a "some airports" thing. It's Federal law. All airports and airlines are required to do this.

Federal code prohibits the placing of any kind of marking on the outside of your luggage that would indicate the presence of a firearm It's part of Title 18 of the USC.

Look at it this way.......

1. being able to pack a firearm for protection while traveling.....cost: $20/day
2. mugged while traveling unarmed......cost: $100's of dollars
3. the look on a mugger's face when you pull your CCW when mugged....priceless!

Unfortunately, it appears that your flying that turd airline called Allegiant. In which case, you should be far more worried about landing upside down than whether or not you need a weapon when you get to your destination.

I have flown them twice and the last time was a real **** show. They loaded me up in the back of the plane and the stairwell collapsed on me a few steps from the top and trapped me and another lady. Nobody seemed to give a **** and my wife had to ask them if it would be OK to free me so I could sit with her and the kids on the trip........they finally got around too it. Then on the return flight I had not one, but two 35,000 feet waitresses start harrassing me about taking my earphones out while I was helping my kid wake up and put his stuff away. I told them I was working on it and would do so when I got my kid situated. Apparently that really concerned them. Guess what..............they called the popo to escort me off the plane for being "unruly". The guy sitting next to me couldn't believe it and gave the officer a statement too. The officer couldn't believe it and told me not to worry about it he wasn't going to do anything.

That is one low rent airline. Make sure that Transamerica policy is paid up.

Have a safe trip.

Out!

My daughter works for Mesa Gateway airport and told me that Allegiant had zero customer service, but your experience puts them deeply in the negative column...

Seldomseen: I have lived in or near Wichita for over 30 years and unless you are planning to go visit some gang bangers there isn't much of a need to pack heat.
It's the relatives I'm worried about!:biglaugh:

I think that we are probably going to pony up the $80.00 and check a suitcase, I convinced the wife that some wife of a TSA agent will end up with her expensive cosmetics if we try to carry them on....
Being able to pack our guns in the same suitcase is the secondary benefit.
