As a new C5 owner, I researched before I bought, and came across this article, where I got a clearer idea of how much smithing is actually involved in producing a Baer. It's brief and worth a read:

Interesting article.

That's a lot more hand work than I would have guessed for semi-custom...whatever that really means. But, from the Baers I have seen, they appear to be very well made and finished.

When all is said and done, over 40 man hours of labor are involved in every pistol.

The semi-custom term came about a couple of years ago by a gunsmith who needed to distinguish between he and Baer and justify charging almost double for a product that might have been questionable.

Why did Baer change from Breakfree to Militec?

Blueing is done on-site, but plating and Baercoat(R), (a durable, self-lubricating finish) are done by vendors.

Another person that thinks Bearcoat is Baercoat. Bob Ford should have come up with a different name for his product.

Why did Baer change from Breakfree to Militec?

I didn't know they did - but wise choise IMHO - Militec is #1 for lube in my book!
