the original S&W M-40 and M-42 Airweight Centenials had grip safeties, and also came with a pin to disable it. S&W had several older models with one and the M-40/42 were called the "last of the lemon squeezers"
Actually, that would have been the Luger P.06 with the grip safety. It was dropped for the P.08, although Mauser made some commercial Lugers with the grip safety after WWII.
Allow me to go against the grain and say I really don't like grip safeties all that much. With the good positive thumb safeties that my Yost-Bonitz 1911s have (and the 1991A1 even has the firing pin safety), and good holsters (such as my Sparks VM2, what do I need a grip safety for? My CZ-75 can be carried cocked and locked and it has no grip safety.
