For general sharpening I still use an Arkansas stone and oil.

For putting a new edge on a knife, meaning both a primary and a secondary angle, I use a KME sharpening set. Works very well for me.

I am a custom knife maker and have tried many sharpening stones and systems. The la sky worked well for me, but now I only use the Wicked Edge sharpening system. It is the best I have tried, but it cost closer to $300.00. For just wet stones I pretty much only use Norton medium grit India stones. I grew up using those in my dads meat shop. I have never tried the spyderco sharp maker. Hope that helps!

The WEPS is very good, but there are a few more stone options for the Edge Pro. It's also a bit easier to use with very large knives. For under $100 I think the Harbor Freight belt sander with some belts is the way to go, but the learning curve is something to consider. It runs screaming fast which equals a lot of heat if you're not careful. Still, it will get knives hair splitting sharp and is great for repairs (eg broken off tips, bad chips).

Hey there Fastball, sorry if we misled you here but the Spyderco is NOT THE BEST CHOICE for reshaping knife shoulders, that takes a grinder or belt removing lots of metal; were talking edge sharpening for under $100.00 and something the Spydies do very well. I use an old verticle grinder with several different grid 42 x 1 inch belts for shoulder shaping or forming a new piece of steel...

I like my Lansky. It does take a little while to get used to using it I think, but does a good job. Lately, however, I've been lazy and using my Chef's Choice sharpener. Originally got it for doing kitchen knives, but found out it works well on pocket knives as well.

work - sharp is the way to go, I have tried lansky, and to much trouble to set up and I still didn't get a good edge. I got the work sharp and sharpened knifes for guy's at work so they could shave their arm with a cheap 6.00 knife, also took a piece of metal binding strap and got it sharp enough to cut paper, you will be amazed

When I was a little fellow my Granddaddy gave me a 2 sided oil or spit stone 10 inch's long 1 an 1/4 thick coarse on one side and fine on the other. I still have it 72 now got it when I was seven, those days thats all there was, far as I'm concerned still is. Well forgot about the giant wheel stone foot operated great for Ax's or a new build, still is. I have started using two white sticks for final edge that you can shave with, face that is. Spit is best.
Almost forgot still use a barbrr starp.

I've tried a ton of methods over the years...you name the system I've probably used it and got varying results.

For me, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is the best I've used in term of consistency and overall ease of use. That paired with a leather strop and you should be able to sharpen just about anything.

There are still a few things though I just prefer an old fashioned wet stone for though.

Sharpening knives is something that has always seemed to be a black art to me.
But I just ordered the Spyderco Sharpmaker after hearing so many good things about it.
Here's hoping! :)

There's nothing I like better than a scarry shap knife. I bought a Edge pro professional about 5 years ago. It has been the best investment I made in sharpening equipment. I have added some stones from Shapton I got them from Chef knives to go. They rang form 500 to 30K.

I grew up in a butcher shop. Arkansas stones were all we used. Then came stainless steel. The stones did not work. I have a lanskys but on my buck knives and henckle kitchen knives they would not work well. I purchased a DMT sharpening system, diamond. Diamond is the only way to go for the new harder steels, much faster and sharper. The system is about $90 though. Just thought I would mention another system. They have a good website too.

Another vote for Edge Pro.

For replacement stones for the Edge Pro, Congress Tool moldmaster stones actually work better than the originals in the coarse and medium ranges and cost less.

DMT stones work well also, but silicon carbide stones are just as effective and are less expensive.

If your going to pay hundreds of dollars for a good knife, why would you go for budget dollar sharpeners?
I think it depends a lot on what you use the knife for. My normal daily, do anything knife gets touched up on a Craftsman wet stone tool grinder. Caught mine on sale for $69.
Works exceptional well, is fast and efficient.

I've tried stones but never got very good with them, then as a knifemaker tried the Sharpmaker and also using the grinding belt to sharpen with. Now I have a Wicked Edge system and it is by far the best thing I've bought. Much easier and more effective than the Spyderco system, and better than a grinding belt because I can precisely control the edge angles.
