I wanted to share this with you folks.
Krieghoff maker of fine hunting rifles and shotguns recommends mineral spirits, because it is gentle on the finish and does an excellent job of disolving the oils and grease.
I usually spray the gun down, brush it off as usual and then use a air compressor to get the crud off. Then I simply oil and grease as usual. Of course the barrel gets whatever powder solvent you prefer.
Cuts cleaning time in 1/2 and no stink!:rock:
