I still live in Texas, in a small rural community SE of Dallas...but I can't recall the last time I've seen a pickup with a rifle rack, or visible rifles. Times have changed, and so have some of our terms and meaning. Unfortunately, not for the better.[/QUOTE]

How True I forgot about the old rear window rifle racks until u posted this! Times really have changed. I wouldnt dare use one now.

I grew up in a small West Texas town, and everybody had a pickup with a couple of rifles in the rear window rack...even us kids, or even at school. No one thought anything about it...and there was plenty of open land outside of town to go shoot rabbits or cans. Back then, jack rabbits were a plague and you were doing the ranchers a favor and having fun at the same time. I really don't recall anyone carrying handguns then...I'm sure the adults did, I just don't recall it.

You'll still find them around Morton, Maple, Sundown, Anton, Amherst, and Brownfield although Brownfield is getting a bit more "cosmopolitan" than it used to be...:biglaugh:

Born and raised in Texas.

Unfortunately, the definition and population of predators has been expanded to include their urban territory.:(
Ain't that the sad truth? Amen....

I never felt the need to carry a defensive weapon where I lived before here. Not ever. Granted, I packed when heading into towns, but roaming the countryside, I never even gave it a thought.

Living here in York, I wouldn't leave home without it. This place is for the birds and going to the dogs in a hurry. I guarantee you, this isn't where I'm gonna die.

And I wasn't trying to insult anyone, or call anyone dumb. I was just pointing out what "truck gun" typically means when you read a review and the guy says "It would make a good truck gun...". Generally means "if you got a few hundred bucks burning a hole, go ahead, but it sure isn't going to make any headlines as a rifle. It's good enough to own, but bad enough to not care about."

As I mentioned in my original post, I am not talking about leaving a gun in my vehicle 24/7. Even though I park my truck (Ford Expedition) in a locked garage at night, I don't leave valuables in it...I bring them in the house.

During the course of the day, while I or we are out and about running errands, going to dinner, etc, there are many occasions when I have to leave my gun in the car. For example, my wife is disabled, and has to go to frequent doctor's appointments, physical therapy, etc, and you cannot legally carry a gun in a hospital. Since I have an Expedition, there is no trunk...but I am thinking about either a console safe, or a lock box that I can put under a seat, chained to the seat support post. When we stop, I could transfer the gun from "accessible" to the locked storage. Then, when we get back to the car, I could move the gun back to "accessible."

I had actually given some thought to a Taurus, something like a PT111, but I don't have any confidence in Taurus products in general...I want to have the most reliable gun I can in case I need it. Maybe I am wanting to have my cake and eat it too, in that I don't want to risk losing one of my "better" guns...but I want to have the best gun I own if the time ever comes to actually use it. I would hate to have ANY gun stolen, because I just can't abide a thief in general, but to lose a gun to a thief is beyond offensive! I could live with losing a good gun to the police if I had to use it to defend myself or my wife...I'd rather be alive and minus one gun, than dead with great guns to leave to my heirs.

Still, what is that optimal truck gun? That is what I am puzzling over.
I have in my car a Gun Vault, comes with a steel cable taht I have around the trunk frame, but fits under the seat also

I just bought this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Club-LB200-Personal-Vault-Security/dp/B002WRRNFO

So far I like it, with one drawback: it is a little on the small size; my XDm 45 with a 4.5" barrel won't quite fit in it, and my 5" pistols certainly won't. My 4" pistols will, so it works ok for them.

I'm really thinking about getting a SW9VE just to keep in the truck...it is on sale right now at Academy for $279. I've owned one before, and the trigger is pretty stout indeed, but not any worse than a typical DA revolver. It's simple, rugged, very inexpensive, and holds 16 + 1. It's not a range pistol, by any means, but it will certainly do the job in a case of emergency, and it's not one that I would worry about over much in the truck...especially in the vault under the seat.

I have one of those boxes that I installed in the saddlebag of my Harley, but the cable is way to tiny to rely on, as it appears to small to withstand a decent set of wire cutters, so I drilled the back and used bolts to secure. I think this has an application for confined space, but not for an auto.

Something more like this would be a better solution, and is the same price. I have had one in the house for a couple of years, and it works great.

It could easily be bolted to the floor in the trunk or other location, and would take quite an effort to open, much more than the little gun box.

I have to agree with those who say "Don't leave the gun in your car if you are not there." You never know when it might get broken into. Some states have laws making you liable if your gun is used in a crime. I personally always have mine strapped to my hip unless going into the post office or place not allowed. At which it is locked in a gun box in the car. I do however leave a extra mag in the center console.

I've weighed the risk/rewards, liabilities/benefits and decided to have not only an inexpensive handgun (concealed) in my car but also the AK47 (secured).

I went to Academy Sports last night, intending to but an SW9VE...but they had a SD9 in the case for $399, so I bought that instead. If you aren't familiar with the SD9, it is a mid-way pistol between the SW9VE and the M&P. It is very similar to the Glock 19, and the take down is the same. Anyway, I plan to use it for my truck gun.

After using the Club (lock box) for a day, though, as I was in and out of stores running errands, it is rather a pain in the butt. With the cable wrapped completely around the seat support post, it is hard to unlock and maneuver. Plus, since I had to put in under the middle row seat (it wouldn't fit under the front seat, due to the power motor for the seat) it means I have to get out of the truck and go to the rear door and put my gun in the safe...which means someone may see me do it. I think I will eventually get one of the lock boxes that are made to fit inside the console between the seats...made specific to the model of the car. It is more expensive, but worth it, plus there won't be any concerns with cutting a cable.

Well I have a couple of AT 4's that I borrowed from my guard unit behind the seat of my Dakota, some gatling lasers hidden under the headlights, and when I hit the eject button a SAW drops from the ceiling and into my lap....

There's justifiable concern, unreasonable paranoia, good gun ettiquette, and bad gun ettiquette. Bad would involve leaving any kind of arm in a vehicle. Vehicles get stolen, chopped up, and yeah I'm betting the current generation of carjackers are savvy enough to get through your vundersafe or the cable with a combo-lock you have on your gun. Also in what event would you have time to unlock and then unlimber something like a long arm while inside of a vehicle coming under fire? If my ass is getting shot at and I have a choice between bailing and returning fire with my SD handgun or going for a long arm or other weapon in the car? Well, I'm sorry but I have a good self preservation instinct and I'm going to either hit reverse and back up like the front end is on fire or bail out and go for my primary carry weapon. Your body has just dumped massive amounts of adrenaline, and all your careful planning is jacked to hell and a handbasket as you have to let your mind race through a list of options. If you already carry each and every day what's the worry? That and as DSK first pointed out...leaving a gun in the car...bad. I know multiple parties that have had guns stolen or cars with guns in them stolen who had similar ideas. I also know of no one who ever had such a setup in their car like handgun/rifle and/or shotgun combo that ever put it to use. Nor have I heard of such an incident outside of LEO's who get paid to go looking for trouble.

Not worth the trouble or the risks/liability if the gun falls into the wrong hands. If you live in any sort of population center it's an even worse idea.

I just want to emphasize that my use of the Club (or other locking device) is to temporarily secure my handgun in the car when I am unable to bring it into a premise (such as a hospital) where carry is prohibited, while I am out running errands. It is not for long-term or overnight storage in the vehicle. I agree that leaving a gun in your vehicle permanently is a bad idea for several reasons...but it seems better to me to have a more secure option for temporary storage than the glove box for those occasions during the course of a day when I have to leave my pistol in the car temporarily.

I bring my handgun in the house at night, even though I park in my attached, locked garage. I don't leave a gun in the car permanently. We don't live in a high crime area, and my garage is locked, but I just don't like to do it.

I gotta agree with not leaving your guns in a car overnight, but when times demand, a quality lock box underneath the seat works well for me.

On a slightly off but still related topic, please for the love of god take the NRA supporter decals off the car/truck. It just screams break in to this car and you will find a gun.

Here's my "truck gun" for my Jeep Wrangler
:JeepWave:

I'm always bewildered by people who want to leave a loaded gun in their car. It's just like people who hide loaded guns all over their house.
I've got a loaded gun in mine with no safe. The rest of the ammo is locked in a drawer safe. But with no kids it doesn't bother me (obviously I clean up when kids are over). And to the point of coming home while there's a burglary in progress and they grab my loaded gun, well that's why I carry and have one in the car and that's also why I don't enter the house to 'clear' it

yea I'd love to show my support but that's the reason I don't put it on mine. The only people I've known (personally) to put it on their cars are little-d!cked tough guys that don't even own a gun. Ya know...the kinda guys that go to the gym and do curls 5 days a week. Those guys. :biglaugh:
