I have some McCormick shooting star mags. I heard the baseplates are welded on and none removeable. Is this true?

Yes, it is. Using a pencil or like tool depress the follower until it is below a couple of witness holes. insert a nail or a piece of wire thru a witness hole below the follower, shake out the follower (you may have to pull it out with a bent piece of wire), cupping your hand over the top of the magazine remove the retaining wire/nail and let the spring extend. Note how the spring sits in the magazine. Pull out the spring, clean the magazine tube, wipe down the spring and follower and assemble in reverse order, making sure the spring is seated correctly under the follower.

When I disassemble mine, I just pull the follower out with my fingertips. No tools necessary. To reassemble, I push the spring in until just the top coil is exposed, I catch it on its seat on follower, insert the rear of the follower in through the front of the mag, then rotate the follower back and down.
