I just bought the Kimber today. Im having a gunsmith do some things before I pick it up.

1. Install S&A magwell fit correctly to the bevel in the frame. Sharpin existing checkering on magwell.
2. Drill guide rod so I can captivate the spring.
3. Install base pad on the mag that came with the gun.

Im sorry I had to tell.....

Anyway now I need to know what mags will work. Im thinking of CMC 10mm 9 rounders W/ base pads. Any comments or suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Thanks JoeD

Im glad you mentioned that you use a 180gn. bullet seated at 1.200. I normally use a 200 bullet seated at the same length with 5.0gns. of HP-38 for I.P.S.C.

For I.D.P.A. I was going to try to make a wimp load with the same bullet length and a 180 bullet traveling at about 750fps (135PF). I was wondering if I could seat a 180 grainer that high. Well now I know. Im probally going to use Clays since the velocities so low. And I'll probally need a different recoil spring.

Anyway back to the main subject...
Do Metalforms come with base pads? Where can I get um? Whats the cost? And still if anyones used CMC I'd be interested in there results.

I'd consider using 45 ACP mags but I don't have a 45 in the case that it didn't work. I feel more comfortable trying 10mm's.

Thanks,

I use a 16 lb. spring. Brownells has 10mm McCormick mags with BPs for $20.97. They also have a 6 pack of pads with screws for $7.16. The Metalform 10mm mags are $16.92 w/o pads. The least expensive way to go would be Metalform 8rd. .45 mags with the above pads. Cost would be $12.74. You may have to trim some of the pads to get the gun to fit into the "box".

Thanks

I thought that was what you were going to say. I guess I'll need 4 mags. Im going to use the Kimber to shoot I.D.P.A. and single stack comps. (I.P.S.C. rules). I've got my major pf. load already now I gotta work on a enhanced load (125pf). I thought it would be easier to go with the same bullet length but I never loaded 180grn. bullets at that length (1.200) so thanks.

Well I finally got my Kimber back from the gunsmith and the CMCs seemed to work great.
I fired 250 rounds. In the first 25 shots the slide locked back with one round in the mag. It only happened once so I assume it's just break-in.

I also had two jams where the back of the bullet seemed to not want to slide up the breech face under the extractor. Maybe the extractor is to tight or maybe this is just break-in related. It seems like every 1911 needs about a 1000 rounds through it to be broke-in.

Other than those 3 malfunctions I had no problems. I fully loaded the mags. Im going to the range today to see if I have any more problems. I removed the extractor and polished the hook to a mirror finish. I also checked for tightness and it did seem a little tight.

Did you get the CMC 10mm mags? Would you do me a favor and look at the back corners at the top to see if they are smooth or if the corners protrude a bit. My Colt mag corners protrude I am going to try to file them smooth to see if that helps with my failure to eject the last round. They tend to stovepipe and pinch the mouth of the case into the top of the port.

They don't protrude at all. I checked all four of them and there smooth.

I had to put a small detent in my slide stop to prevent the slide from locking back with one round in the mag. That happened 5 times in 600 rounds and hasn't happened in the last 400 rounds since I fixed it.

Other than 2 jams the first 100 rounds on a brand new gun (extractor to tight) I haven't had another jam and Im up to 1000.
