Recently bought an early production 1991A1, used, in a Colt Blue Plastic box. Box is smaller than the ones used on later 1911's and has no label; tho I'm certain its original to the gun. Question: did some of these come with a cardboard cover, somewhat like the ones that cover the styrofoam inserts?

Yes, they did. The outer case was a cardboard slip case covered in sepia-like reproductions of older Colt print advertisements.

Scott: much obliged for the feedback. Wish they had stayed with that type box made specific for for 1911's. Not so big and gawky.

The very early ones were brown plastic with cardboard sleeve .
