I'm thinking about buying a new Colt 1991A1 Combat Commander and would like to get some feedback on any idiosyncrasies peculiar to the Commander as opposed to the Government model such as reciol/muzzel rise, reliability, shootability or any other info. Thanks, JohnH

I own or have owned both. For ccw the Combat Commander is a little easier to conceal, but being all steel it is a heavy weapon. The full size pistol is a little heavier, has a longer sight radius and is a little easier to shoot accurately..at least for me. Can't go werong with either one though. For competition use, I'd go with the longer barrel of the full size model.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate you comments. Suprised someone replied given the removal from the Gen. Disc. board. I guess I should have said, Commander-sized vs. Full-Sized - Oh wait a minute, I forgot Commander is a registered trademarks - How about 4 1/4" vs. 5". Thanks again Jim. JohnH

I can shoot the Commander just as good as the GM.I have bad eyes so the Commander is really easyer for me to shoot to be honest. But it does have more of a kick.If you want it for carry,it is easyer to Carry the Commander

38 Super Combat Commander, my eyes are getting a little tired also, maybe that's why a prefer short barreled pistols. I assume you own a Combat Commander in 38 Super given your handle. I absolutely crave the Commander chambered in 38 Super. Had a chance to buy one a couple of years ago and passed on it. I've been kicking myself ever since. Could you tell me a few things about your Commander in 38 Super, such as recoil compared to the .45 Commander and feed reliability. Thanks for your comments, JohnH.

I also shoot as well with my Commander as my 1911.

If you're ready to drop some serious change, a rare Commander Gold Cup hit GunsAmerica.com yesterday. Price is $1,250, I think, which is about market value. I bet it won't last more than a day or two.

The Commander is a bit "snappier" recoil-wise when compared to the Govt. due to the faster slide cycle time. The recoil spring is 2 lbs. heavier so operating the slide to chamber a round is a bit more difficult. Other than that, it's the same.

I observe a noticeable increase in muzzle blast with the Commander using the same load. "A little less pleasant to shoot" than the full-sized pistol would about cover it. Certainly just as accurate. I don't find it any easier to pack in a IWB holster than the 5" pistol.

I used to carry a Colt Government model, but found it a tad heavy for all-day carry, and a little bit slow out of the leather.

I have since purchased a Series 70 Combat Commander (all steel) and had it customized.
GREAT GUN. It carries easily, clears leather faster, is just as accurate (or more so, with the modifications) than the Govt. model. I shoot 185-gr. Golden Sabers and don't notice the recoil at all. I used this gun two weeks ago during a two-day shooting class. First out of the leather, double taps to center mass, first back in the leather.

I'd get the Commander.....

Best, ACP

Hey JohnH My 38 Commander is pre 70`s and I have it completly customized.I have wilson fixed combat sights. My friend Frank had it for a year at gunsmith school and did a great job on it.I also have a 9mm barrel and mags for it incase I`m to poor to shoot 38 supers. At 25 yards it makes 1 hole groups from a sand bag.In 9mm not quite as good.

I will have to second all the positive comments on the Commander. I carry a '51 Light Weight in 45 for duty use and I like the way it moves for me. The shorter length seems to make the draw smoother and when I have to engage multiple targets it just moves eaiser.

Accuracy is top of the line with all of my Colt Commanders, the all steel ones dont have as much felt recoil as the LW but that is to be expected. I havent really paid much attention to the muzzel blast so for me its not an issue.

I dont think you can go wrong with the Commander, in my opinion it will do anything its big brother can do.

My only problem these days is trying to figure out which front sight to use, these damn trifoculs are a real pain.

ken,
If your wearing a tri-focal you might consider and try a variable lens like Varilux.
I have been wearing a Bi focal for about 20 years and the variable lens has made a major difference n my ability to aquire the front sight.
I discovered them years ago through a photo magazine when It was mentioned that it made it much easier to see the internal displays without an annoying line to mess you up.

I came across an absolutely NIB early Series 80 satin nickel Combat Commander this weekend at the local gun show. It was still in the factory box with all the papers and the owner was selling for $600! Didn't have the cash to buy and went home depressed! It would've made a nice brother to my Series 80 Combat Commander in blue. Also saw about a half dozen in Super .38, most running about $800 to a $1000.

The Commanders are wonderful carry guns and I find them just a accurate to shoot as the Govt. models.

I have fired some shorter barrel guns. Such as Sig P220's, Glock 45, but in all my 1911 collecting and shooting. Have never fired one less than 5". Functioning should be the same with a Government to Commander. As the slide and barrel are slightly smaller but the frame is the same. The Officer is the different animal. Velocity tests have been conducted so don't worry about slight difference there. Just flip a coin and say heads Government tails Commander and American coin Colt.
