Who are the best gunsmiths in the D/FW area and who should be avoided. I'm in the Plano area and don't mind driving aways for a reputable gunsmith.

I had some work done by Crawley Custom Guns out of Kemp, TX. He is at all the gun shows to pick up new work, deliver finished work to customers and sell aftermarket parts. You can also go to his shop (that looks more like a operating room than a work shop) to pickup and deliver. Single man operation that turns out quality craftmanship on 1911 and AR pattern weapons.
Not affiliated in any way other than a satisfied customer.

If you need work on 1911 type pistols, I am about an hour south of Dallas. Check out my website for more info.

I'd use SPS (Silouette Guns) in Carrollton. Larry is a FABULOUS gunsmith. They're on Beltline and Josey in Carrollton.

I (and many others) do NOT recommend Richard the Gunsmith who is in the same area at Big Bear Arms. He botched the Novak sights (installation) on my 3 HKs. Sent them to Novak to be redone!

Comment about his "attitude" is correct also.

I've used BB for a few transfers, bought some ammo and a holster. Never used Richard though I have spoken with him a few times.

The owner is a fellow from Soviet Armenia named Baerge (probably not the proper spelling, but sounds like bearj). I was speaking with him once and made mention of my daughter doing a report for a freshman high school history class on the Cold War. He offered to speak with her on the subject if she was interested. This transpired into a 1.5 hour brain dump of what life was like in a communist country from someone who lived there. Awesome. Only my grandfather's tales of WWII can compare. Not only did he spend the time with her, but he did this AFTER the shop had closed one Friday evening. This is one of the reasons I will continue to do business with them. Richard may be a hack/crackpot/whatever but the owner is heck of a guy.

Hey guys, that was close. I was to see Richard the Gunsmith this afternoon for my SA 2001 Loaded for reliability work. I will try to contact the recommended gunsmith on this thread then.

As for the owner, just like SeanTX, I have high respect for the guy; has great people skills and is very fond of my little girl during my visits there.
