Difficult to replace(upgrade) slide release and mag release?

1773 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jaydee
I am very new to 1911's and have Kuhnhausen's shop manual and Dave Kuack's "Tactical 1911" both coming this week. I have seen a 1911 completely disassembled. If I can do this(which I will), can I replace these or is it sensitive work? I could have sworn that I saw the slide release totally removed in that fieldstrip I witnessed...

The slide release is a drop-in part and easy to change. The mag release can be removed with a small allen wrench and replaced with a larger(competion) release.

Hope this helps

Scotty, both parts you mentioned are easier to replace than a grip screw. Wait till you get your books if you are unsure. Then you can gut it and be a pro.
Cool. I am glad to do it myself and save money and get the experience if it is that simple. I don't have the parts yet, though. Are Wilson's parts the best, generally speaking?

I use and swear by Wilson Combat's bullet proof parts. You can't go wrong with their parts. They also stand by them 100% if you are not happy with them.
Scotty45, go to 1911 "How-Tos" and FAQ, I psoted instructions for removing the magazine catch there. You'll have to set your "show last----" for a year to find it. Or do a search in that forum with "Removing the magazine catch" at the search title.

For detail stripping the 1911, you can find the instructions at http://www.m1911.org and http://www.sightm1911.com

While the slide release is an easily replaced part, you may need to tune the angle of the portion that contacts the Mag Follower, so that it doesn't contact a bullet in the mag, and lock the slide open with a full mag.

Also, you can try using an Allen for the mag release, but if you have a slotted head, please use the tab on the Leaf (Sear Finger) Spring, or a screwdriver tip. Remember, this is not a screw, and doesn't unscrew, it simply rotates about 90 degrees counterclockwise with the mag release pressed in.

Good Luck...
