I have a 70s Commander that I attempted to install a Brown grip safety on it.I used the Brown fitting jig and a belt sander to get it close. At this point it was apparent that this safety just was'nt right for this gun.To blend the frame to the BT would have brought the lines into the thumb safety hole.

On Blindhoggs website he mentions this problem on Springfield 1911s.Has anyone noticed this on Commanders?Or Colts in general?

Here is a link to the page mentioning this.Note fig.#11. http://www.blindhogg.com/gunsmith/brownbt.html

Thanks

I know that Springfields have an odd curvature/angle on their beavertails which is what makes them different. I *think* there is something special about Kimbers, too. I am unaware of any such issue with Colts.

Mike I installed one on a 70s Government before.I did not have this problem.I purchased this BT with the intention of swapping out with the one on my Delta. It also has a Brown BT.One has the raised pad,the other does not.It did'nt match the Delta frame cut very well either. The questionable part had some cosmetic flaws also_One side had a casting tit protruding off the side.Maybe I got a part out of their reject bin??

I installed a Wilson grip safety instead.

It sounds like the BT could be a reject, but more likely it's because it's a Commander. They have a different tang cut than the Gov't.I believe it's in between the Gov't and Springfield cut.Someone(available at Brownells) makes a BT with a .220 radius that cures the ugly top gap on a Sprngfld, but don't know how it would fit a Commander.

Ed Brown's GS installs higher on the frame than any I've seen. In order to fit it properly and not have the thumb safety to large for the frame it's gonna be a really close call. I've had luck with a CMC high ride GS that rides almost as high as a Brown. Anyway, I think it can be done with a Brown, but it's so close that you'd have to go slow and remove material very little at a time to avoid exposing that pin hole.

Commander/Officers doesn't really seem to have anything to do with it. It is a function of the individual frame tolerances. I've had some that get into the edge of the hole & some that just clear it. If the safety hole is positioned off tolerance by only a very tiny amount, it can expose the pin hole while blending. Fit of the leg that blocks the trigger affects how much of the safety lug hole (left side) is exposed . If you can, tweak the fit here to minimize/eliminate exposing the hole. Different brands of safety vary as to available material to work with. All depends on how high you wish to grip and how much blending you want to do. The only other consideration for a Brown or any other .250" radius safety is how much material is on the tang past the pin hole. Sprinfields are a tiny bit shy here, hence the .220" S&A safeties that are on the market.
