should the extractor on the new colt im about to get not function properly, do you advise having a smith " tune" it, or replace it with a custom one? what are the steps in which an extractor is removed? how many rounds does an extractor have in it usually before they need attention..thanks much for the help.

Al,its a bit early to worry about the extractor in a pistol you don't have yet but to set your mind at ease extractor problems aren't very high up on the list of problems for Colt pistols...They can last many, many years are not too difficult to adjust...A smith can do it for less than $30...Check out this sight for more info..www.sight1911.com

Also, use the search feature here. Enter "extractor" - there are a lot of posts relating to this.

al - (can I call you al?) -

If you want to consider doing it yourself, check out www.m1911.org/technic.htm - there is a wealth of technical information in the articles there.

Hope this helps!
