1 Dead, 4 Injured In Winter Park Home Invasion

http://www.wesh.com/news/21411876/detail.html

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Authorities said one person was killed while four others were injured in a home invasion in Winter Park on Friday.

Kim Cannaday of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a call of shots fired near the 7000 block of Fernbrook Way at 11:30 p.m.

That's when they found a man lying on the street with gunshot wounds. Two women then exited the home at 7792 Fernbrook crying and told police there were three people inside the home who had also been shot.

Deputies said they cleared the residence and found the three victims in various locations of the home.

Witnesses said two of the victims were returning to the home after making a trip to get something to eat. When they approached the front door, they were confronted by armed men and made to lie on the ground. One of the men then shot one of the victims and entered the home, firing.

Police said that's when the homeowner, Mack Brooks, retrieved his .45 handgun and began shooting at the intruders, who turned and fled.

One of the intruders, identified as 20-year-old Maurice Thomas, collapsed in the street and was later pronounced dead at the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Another intruder, identified as 23-year-old Trae St. Ange, was found in a wooded area behind the home and was listed in stable condition at ORMC.

Brooks and one of the victims, 22-year-old Christopher Philpott, were also transported to ORMC in stable condition while a third victim, 33-year-old Marcus Bryant was treated and released at the scene.

Brooks said this is the second time he has been shot in a home invasion.

Anyone with information regarding the crime is asked to call CrimeLine at 800-423-TIPS or the Seminole County Sheriff's Office at 407-665-6650.

Wonder why he "retrieved" his weapon. If this was second time he was involved in a home robbery, why wasn't he carrying?

I agree with Golly Gee, but at least he got to his gun and got to shoot the BGs before they killed them.
