Recently, my 1911 fell off a shelf, bounced off my head and landed on the edge of the safe's door frame. The slide received a small nick near the slide stop notch. The slide is carbon steel.

What is the best way for an amateur to smooth out the nick? I plan to smooth out the nick and use a bluing pen to cover up the blemish.

The pistol is a working gun so the touch up doesn't have to be perfect.

Also, any ideas how to repair a deeper scratch/gouge to a Ruger 22/45 polymer frame?
