I was a part time knife maker for quite a few years (still do some occasionally), but it was mostly stock removal. A friend of mine had a forge and I would use his for the few knives that I forged. I really enjoyed it. If I had the time again I would get my own and make all knives by forging.
As far as supplies I would try to locate a blacksmith in your area or go to the American Bladesmith Society page and see what info you can find there. Also some community colleges offer blacksmithing courses, they will probably have sources. The hardest thing would be to find or build a forge. The tools can often be found at auctions and state sales (thongs, hammers, anvils, etc) very reasonable. Some of the hammers you will have to modify yourself.
Good luck and if I can be of any more help, pm me.
Regards

Go to my buddies website and send him an e-mail he just finished building a forge. He might be able to point you in the right direction.
