Hello, I am new to the is site.

What is the best way to rebuild the frame rails on a 1911? I have a stainless frame that was peened a bit too much trying to get the slide to fit tighter. Now the rails are not high enough. What is best tig welding and re-heat treating? Thanks.

Hi Magnum, I have TIG welded the rails with 4130 rod on stainless steel frames with good results. I use grooved cooper plates to guard the the frame flats from the heat and over runs. Don't worry about the heat-treat the 4130 is some tough, stong wire. Most frames are not heat-treated anyway, if you try to heat-treat the frame would probably warp. Magnum, this is a little easier said than done. George at EGW has done these jobs before, give him a call, Metal Smith

Thanks a bunch for the info. I appreciate it. It sounds like a place to start. I can do everything once the rails are built up. I like to get basket case guns from people learning to be gunsmiths. I will give it a shot, worst case it ruins the frame.
