Go to War 1911

Hello all 👋🏼
I have been a fan of the 1911 platform for years, and I am finally wanting to get a 1911 to carry. I am by no means a collector or a traditionalist. So rails, front slide serrations, beveled mag wells, and red dots are on the table.

What I am looking for is a 5” government model that offers maximum accuracy without sacrificing in the reliability or durability departments. I am essentially wanting a go to war handgun that will last through anything I could possibly put it through while being a laser gun without me thinking twice about it.
Through reading on this forum and others my research led me to the Springfield Armory Professional w light rail, but there are a few things about the gun I would want different. So I called them earlier today and they person that answered the phone told me that the custom shop doesn’t do custom builds for people anymore and that they just make the Professional, which they’re not even making any of at the moment.

So biases and preferences aside. Where would you guys recommend to go to acquire the “best” combat 1911 that meets the criteria I told you guys. Is a custom build the route or is there a 1911 I can buy that is truly on the same level as the Professional?
Thanks, Paul

Get one that is red dot ready. Just put one on my G3c and now I'm looking for a slide that is red dot ready for my 1911.

Thanks Dad

Yeah I figured that would make the most sense, thanks for the input.

What are you trying to change on the SA Professional.

To start with the checkering. I have heard 20 lpi is pretty aggressive for shooting without gloves.

Next would be front slide serrations which is obviously something I could get done after the fact.

Lastly would be milling for a trijicon rmr, which is also something that could be done after the fact.
Custom 1911’s are ‘the sky’s the limit’ so what are you wanting to spend? $1k $3k

It's always cheaper to get what you want at the beginning rather than trying to find a competent expert to perform a modification after the fact.

Yeah that’s probably the best bet since it seems finding a Professional will likely be a PITA.
That’s where my question came in about an equally capable alternative.

What I always try to explain to the Glock owners who want to jump into the 1911 pool - not all parts interchange, easily.

Not all 1911 sight dovetails are the same, not all sight options are available for all sight dovetails, not all grip safeties are beavertail grip safeties, and not all grip safeties fit on all 1911's without modification. The key thing to understand - there are no drop in parts in a 1911.

Choose wisely up front, and save yourself some time, effort, and money, modifying later.

I understand that things aren’t as straightforward as they are with Glocks in that aspect. I’m asking about a manufacturer offering a pistol that is built for the same level of combat and reliability as the Professional is or was?

If it feels good to you and it runs, go with it.
Here are a couple of inspirational Les Baer threads...

The advice i got 60 years ago KISS (keep it simple stupid). The other go cheap learn how to use it then figure out what to change but the tons of advice you receive is all good.
