I seem to remember that some years ago Colt made a special run of series '70 slides as they were in such high demand by competion shooters and the public at large.
I have examined a few of the exact same slides you are referring to and I believe these to be part of that (early 90's?) production run, hence the "Colt Competition" mark.
I do recall seeing ad's run for these in the back of the American Rifleman. I'm sure some TFL 'smith or collector can verify this with further details.
