You CAN, but it will not be cheap.
Buy a Commander barrel, slide, sights, bushing, recoil spring, guide, plug, firing pin and extractor. Assuming you want to get back to 5". If not, most of the parts other than the slide can be transplanted with or without modification.
Install Commander upper on G.M. lower, fitting and adjusting as required and testfire.
Does it work? Yes? Great.
No? Thin recoil spring guide to minimum and try again.
OK now? Yes? Good.
No? Use milling machine to set recoil abutment and frame rails back about .080" - .100" to match true Commander dimensions.
It ought to work now, but if it doesn't you are in for a lot of work to track down the problem.
I've put a Colt Combat Commander upper (barrel, slide, etc.) on my AO 1911... As Mr. Watson put it, it takes some $$$ and time to work it out, but it DOES work! I think it'll give you a refreshing change for your AO...
