Has anyone drilled their wood grips for medallions? Can I use a Forstner bit of the proper diameter, without too much risk of damaging the checkering? Should I drill a pilot hole for the medallion shank first, then enlarge the hole? Should I forget the whole thing?

I'm no expert but have done this several times. Used a Forstner but first laid an old grip panel on top of the new one, used drill bits in the screw holes to line them up, marked the location of medallion center from the old grip, then drilled away with the forstner, checking depth often,I have always ground the shank of the new medallion and epoxied them in,didn't want to risk cracking the new grip by peening the shank.
