I've had stair tape on my Springer for near on forever, and the backstrap of my duty 686. They are both in need of replacing, at this point, but they have both been heavily used. Neither has come free or lost its texture.
I would second the recommendation that you use the 2" width; if nothing else, you have plenty of excess material to custom cut as you might desire.
Where do you get "marine" tape? I've checked at our local marina and they don't know about it, though they didn't impress me as being experts in all things nautical. Will keep the eyes open.
