I am still trying to find one also.

I do NOT recommend Richard the Gunsmith (works out of Big Bear Arms in Carrollton), or Larry from SPS guns in Carrollton. In fact, I'd warn against using them.

Will be interesting if someone can actually recommend one in the area.

Why don't you give Ken Crawley a call. He lives in Kemp (down by Cedar Creek Lake), but occasionally you see him at some of the gunshows in Dallas and Fort Worth selling parts. I haven't had any work done by him yet, but plan to soon. I met him a few weeks ago in Fort Worth. Nice guy and the work I saw from some of his satisfied customers was beautiful. Reasonable prices too, compared to others I've seen.

He also did a gun for Wiley Clapp a while back that was recently featured in one of the Peterson magazines, Handguns perhaps? I'll go find it and let you know which one. He said the gun he did for the article was probably one of a kind, probably about $4500.00 worth of work by his guesstimate... but it was interesting to look at.

I had posted a question here about doing a beavertail myself earlier, but it looks like it might be more than I can chew at this point and I'll probably talk to him about having it done along with a few other things (sooner or later - funds permitting probably after Christmas). If so I'd be happy to fill you in on how things go.

I know I haven't had any work done by him yet so I'm only recommending him on the work others have shown me... but at this point I'm impressed with him. Give him a call to see if he's what you're looking for. 903-498-5702.

Hope this helps

I forgot about Brandt. I shoot at Winchester all the time and he pushed the sights on my 1911 over a might some time back. Seemed like a really nice guy but very busy. I haven't seen any of his work yet though.

I agree with QB. Be warned on obtaining services with Larry/SPS Guns. A friend of mine bought a MSH and had it installed. Initial charge was less than 100 bucks. After the part was installed, the hammer follows the slide upon manual cycling therefore the pistol will go full auto if fired. Larry was blaming that somebody tampered with the pistol and seems like a trigger job was done. Pistol was NIB with only 250 rnds through it and never had any modifications. Larry stated he will need to replace the trigger, sear and disconnector, so it is now getting expensive. I advised my friend to just pick it up as is, pay him and mentioned that he will just have a gunsmith friend look at it. The story changed after that; Larry was able to fix it without replacing any parts but he was charged more or less $160.00.
Just need to get that out of my chest. Thanks.
My recommendation too is Mr Ken Crawley, Kemp, TX (903)-498-5702.

Allow me to second Ken Crawley. He has worked on a couple of my 1911's.

He rebarreled a CD FS for me, installed a NM bushing. Have only shot about 1000 rounds since March. Finally got around to accuracy testing this evening.

I am no great pistol shot, but sandbagged at 22 yards, all 8 rounds go into a ragged hole about 2.5 inches across. Not just once, but over and over.

He and his wife, Cindy make most of the Market Hall & Mesquite gun shows. Good folks, first class work, on time, reasonably priced.

Another vote for Ken Crawley. Had him work on my Defender ("reliability package", trigger, dehorn and refinish). Runs like a top, the trigger is like nothing I've ever used before and I get compliments on the appearance all the time. I dropped the gun off to him at a show and went to his place to pick it up. He inisisted that I bring a box of my carry ammo so I could test it and make sure everything is okay. He called me several weeks later (long distance) to make sure there was nothing that needed to be addressed.

He and his wife are a first class act.

FWIW:I would suggest you pick up a copy of Guns & Ammo's "Handguns" edition at the newsstand right now-it has a review of a pistol built by Ken Crawley. geegee

Sorry to get into this so late, but I just joined the forum.

Please add Ben Murray at Murray's Gunsmithing (Garland Road in Dallas) as a gunsmith to avoid. He did some work on a Colt 1911 and messed up the front cocking serrations and over charged me for some other work.

Give Al Ling a call at Innovative Weaponry Inc./PT Night sights. He has specialized in 1911 gunsmithing for 34 years. Graduated in 1968 from Rio Hondo Gunsmithing academy. He owned his own store in California for 20 years by the name of Jericho Custom. Try him out reasonable prices, and great workmanship. He is located in Haltom City, Tx, which is a suburb of Ft. Worth. Call 800-834-9550 and ask for Al Ling.
