I work for a sheriff's office in central Florida. I am assigned to our motor unit. My area has a lot of retirement communities. Today, I had just finished writing a warning. I had just dailed the phone number of my favorite gun dealer so I could order a new Springfield Mil-Spec. A gentleman pulled on his golf cart. He wanted to ask me a question. He stated he was a retired police officer from New York state. He wanted to know why everyone had guns down here and why were they so easy to get.

I explained to him how one purchases a gun, the ATF form and the three day waiting period. He told me that when he retired he got rid of his gun. He thought you should go through a judge and a licensing proceedure.I tried to expain HR 218 on how he could carry nationwide.

As lifetime NRA member, and Second Ammendment foundation member, He had picked the wrong person to speak to. He went on about how much more dangerous it was to be a cop down here. I told him I felt safer down here than in New York.

He said that some people shouldn't own guns. I told him was right. But ,I also said a lot of people shouldn't be allowed to drive.I told him I was responsible for the safety of my family not the goverment. I wanted honest citizens armed

After he left, I ordcered my new pistol. I figured he was either a retired chief or a lifetime member of the I.A.C.P. He could never have been a street cop.

I think it is one of those occupational hazard things you hear about. The higher up they go the less oxygen gets to their brains. Some can make it for the short term but very few survive long term. I retired at 50 and never looked back.

The big complaint I had with Florida is how long it took to get the HR218 proceedure established. They took care of that last year, now I just hope they get more instructors certified to run the qualifications. I was lucky enough to find one last year but I had to do some long distance traveling.

Maybe after the latest church shooting people will get the hint. The BG reportedly had 1,000 rounds in his back pack. I wonder what the body count would have been if the female security guard/ex cop had not been there?

All kidding aside, one of my buddies who works in a different precinct is from the northeast and said the citizens who owned firearms upstate were few and far between almost to the extent of being frowned upon. He also voiced a little concern on how easy it was to LEGALLY buy a firearm in Missouri.

Of course, that only lasted until he bought his first gun here.:biglaugh:

Attitudes towards firearms in New York always amaze me. I live in upstate NY and even among gun owners the opinions are provincial. Deer hunters don't understand black rifles, trap shooters don't understand handgunners, and the police don't understand the legally licensed firearm owner. The only exposure people here have to firearms is through the movies or the thugs they read about in the morning paper. My only glimmer of hope is my children. They may not share my passion for firearms but they will defend my interest in them to teachers and friends. More people need to see guns as a tool and not the devil incarnate.

Atttitudes about a lot of things by a majority of New Yorkers defies understanding. The city is full of like-mined people talking to like-minded people, reading the New York Slimes, a like-minded newspaper, etcetera. They never get any outside input, and if they do, they look at you like a border collie does when you read it Shakespeare! Complete lack of understanding.

As Kyle7491 stated, it really is amazing the types of attitudes between different groups and the Liberal rags do not help with their sensationalism and ignorance. Add to that the near communistic/socialist Public Politically Correct school system and you have a wonderful breeding ground for sheeple. I'm in Central NY and my son graduates from one of the largest school systems in the state next year. I could fill volumes of the crap that, if I hadn't intervened, would have filled his head. Don't get me wrong, I love New York. It's the corrupt crud at the top (who get elected by the sheeple who believe the bs) who ruin it for the rest of us. (That and the freakin' TAXES!)
