I bought a nickle commerative Colt that has what looks to be dried hoppes bore cleaner all over it. Anyone got any ideas how I can restore the finish on this Colt.

Is the finish messed up? Please be a little more specific as to the damage.

It sounds like your nickle finish is actually stained or etched by something. I am assuming you tried some mild solvents (isopropyl alcohol, etc.) first, to see if the stain can be easily removed?

If it is badly stained, you may be looking at having it completely stripped and re-finished.

If that is the "electroless" nickel, I had a devil of a time trying to clean it until I stripped the gun and put the external parts in the dishwasher. Cascade worked.

As to Hoppe's, it is an ammonia solution that can attack both nickel and the copper used as an undercladding on most nickel plated guns. It won't normally discolor nickel unless left on, but if it can get to the copper the nickel will peel.

You might try gasoline (please be careful with flames!!) and see if it will remove the discoloration.
