High-ride thumb safety

On a hunch I purchased a C&S high-ride thumb safety. I like the feel of the safety once I got it fitted properly, and it is comfortable on the thumb.

Too bad the part just doesn't work right. The detent face isn't big enough - this makes it so the part can easily be pushed up into the action by the thumb safety plunger, and it also makes it near impossible to press the thumb safety lever down.

So I'm looking for a new high-ride style thumb safety. I looked at Wilson's, but theirs is ambi. I don't want an ambi.

Are there any other high quality (ie. Wilson quality?) high ride ONE-SIDE thumb safeties out there? Brownells gives me nothing.

I normally use Wilson High Ride safeties. When my wife wanted a single sided safety I too tried the C&S since it looked similar. When I got it, it looked like it was cast in a kitty litter box, rough and ugly. I figured OK with a lot of clean up I can make it look OK. I started to fit it to my sear without fully checking it out. It turned out that the lever was so badly warped that when I got it in, the detent wouldn't even go in the hole because it wouldn't get close enough to the frame. The side was curved away from the shaft. I called C&S and they wouldn't make good on it because I started to fit it. I was pissed and asked them if they were going to sell that warped piece of crap to another unsuspecting customer if I hadn't started to fit it. They would not stand behind their product. No return, period. I will never buy again from them no matter how many folks post that they like their stuff. NO customer service.

I next ordered an Ed Brown because it looked close to the Wilson. When I got the Ed Brown, I removed the hammer and sear to first check if it was square after my bad experience with C&S. It was warped too but it at least looked finished. I sent it back.

I just ordered another Wilson High Ride and cut down the off side so that it didn't inter fear with my trigger finger. I put them on all my guns and the quality is always great. I have pleaded with Wilson to make a single sided safety just like their high ride ambi but no luck so far. If I really only wanted a single side, I would by the Wilson ambi, cut off the right side and silver solder the tongue in the grove to make my own.

Same experience here. I asked them to make it right, they wouldn't. The best they did was said "send in the receiver and we'll install it for a fee". Screw that - I can fit my own safety, and it isn't the receiver's fault.

I really do like the Wilson High Ride. I have just learned to grind the right side a little narrower so that it doesn't dig into my trigger finger with a high grip. They are easy to shape and they polish up nicely. I never bump the safety off on my carry guns because the holster forms around the large inside lever, making it next to impossible to take the gun off safe while still in the holster. This way you still have the option when you have to shoot left handed. I shoot with a high grip both strong and weak handed, it doesn't make sense to change the way you grip and shoot just because you change hands.

The single-sided safety on my Springfield hi-cap looks very much like the Wilson ambi; maybe they sell it as a replacement part?
The C&S part is very rough. I have decided to put in hours of clean-up and polishing to make them look presentable, but yeah, a $60 part should look good and fit well. However, I'm not surprised they wouldn't take the part back after you started cutting on it, and wouldn't describe their refusal as "failing to stand behind their product". If they had installed the part, and it subsequently broke, they'd replace it. If the part was in original condition, they'd replace it. After someone has altered the part, I think they have a right to not fix problems that may have been caused by someone else. That said, I'll still agree that for the price, the part is pretty rough.

TYPICALLY I would agree - except that the part of the part that I modified had NOTHING to do with the part of the part that was out of spec/improperly molded.

And really - you can't TRULY test if a safety works with the plunger properly until you have the nub filed to fit the sear, since you can't rock the safety all the way into its up position until it is filed. It was not until I was done filing that I realized that the detent face isn't tall enough, and that if the safety is engaged I can't take it off without first depressing the plunger.

I COULD file on the detent face, but I think that is inviting troubles. The plunger shouldn't stick too much farther out of the plunger tube than it is already, I think.

Springfield would not sell me a safety. I wanted to replace the ambi and they refused to sell me one. They would install one if I sent it in, but would not sell the part.

Kimber is the same way with their new ambi; you can buy the part, but only if they install it. Do I hear black helicoptors? Is that the direction we're going with "safety" parts, or is it just a coincidence?

Actually, you can check it first, I just didn't think about it until after I got screwed by C&S. I assumed their part would be quality but that's what I get for assuming. After that experience I wised up and removed the hammer, sear and grip safety from the frame and inserted the safety that I got from Ed Brown so that I could see how square it was and how it interfaced with the plunger tube. This is how I saw that the Brown safety was warped without cutting the lug to clear the sear. I had cut the lug on the C&S safety before I noticed how warped it was. As in your case, cutting the lug had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the part was junk and not fit for sale. Had I been suspect of their part and removed the hammer and sear to first check it out I could have returned it. The part wasn't fixable and they should have taken it back since cutting the lug didn't warp it, it was bad to start with. It taught me to fully inspect all parts and never to buy from C&S. There are to many other companies out there that would have apologized for the lack of quality and sent a new part out the next day.

That's Springfields new policy on just about everything. :mummy: The guy's over on XD forum are seriously pissed (including me) :grumble: . I used to like their products, but they have gone down hill lately. I was going to buy another XD, but since they won't sell replacement parts, forget it.

On topic: I like Ed Brown safeties. I have them on all my 1911's.
