I have the opportunity to buy a 3 month old high standard supermatic trophy pistol with a red dot scope for $580, is this a good deal? I once read where someone says the newer pistols are crap compared to the older models and others say they are excellent guns. What do you all think?

Even the older models you have to know what to watch for. The later 107 series and all models produced after that were made after the factory moved and the quality of the handguns started to decline (10X models excluded as they were hand built by their finest gunsmiths). In house products were out-sourced and that started the decline.
The newer models from Texas are suppose to be of the same quality of the later (spotty quality) High Standards. Careful shopping may find you a decent specimen from the earlier High Standards in the same price range you are talking about.
The Supermatic Citation can be had for a little less than the Trophy as it's basically the same pistol.
