Holster Trials

After the wilson experior commander fell out of my holster a few times last weekend, I decided to upgrade my leather. I ordered a few setups from each of the following: Kramer, Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen, Kirpatrick, and Southern Trapper. In the process of ordering from Overland, and plan on an black lizard rig from Andrews. Will post time from order to delivery, initial impressions, and longer term results. I ordered a pancake, double mag holder, crossdraw and belt from each. Also fell for the bbq rig from kirpatrick and a shark setup from milt sparks. Mt needs change from day to day, if in a vehicle or seated for a long time I wear the crossdraw. I do not like iwb at all, everything is owb for me! At the prices I had to pay I hope some of these are ideal.

Was it in this thread, or another, where there was another report of a holster/belt maker who couldn't produce a horsehide belt due to hide availability?

Over the years, most discussion on belts, when makers have popped into threads, seem to indicate, while they may offer a stiffener with horsehide, most comment there is little need to use a stiffener with a horsehide belt.

he told me he could add a stiffener if i went to the bullhide belt.

Yeah, but your order was for a horsehide with stiffener, and it was because of lack of hide, that he couldn't deliver, not anything to do with the stiffener, correct?

I have an A&G bullhide belt, with no stiffener, it's on me right now. No problem with a Government Model and 3 mags. My belt is shorter than yours, though, and perhaps the extra length may make a difference. I don't know if the makers put that kind of recommendation on their sites.

nothing to do with stiffner, and a stiffener was not part of the original order

...ordered 2 gunbelts from ag gunleather. A tad more expensive than the better belt, but i ordered horsehide with stiffener insert.

my mistake, it was shark
bummed. there is a shortage of top grade shark hides so milt sparks cant make the belt.

hmmm... i double checked the receipt before posting, should have checked the posts too. memory is fickle!

i have found a couple other makers for the shark. in progress atm...
I know Al from dealing with him for years and when I called him a month or two ago to order another belt, I asked for Horse hide. I was told that he could not make it because of supply issues. I went with what he recommended, and both of them are very stiff. It worked great.

then i will go ahead and change to bullhide. seems like a good shop so far!
Talk to Al on the phone, he’s a great guy.

just did and order bullhide instead. tan and light brown, with stiffeners. he also recommended grizzle leather in ga. need to get some leather for my new 226 x five, will give him a call tomorrow.
finally had a chance to open the mitch rosen order. each piece was sealed in plastic. the quality is obvious, they are simply perfect. they has a gloss, almost patent leather finish but will see how that does irl. i misordered the belt, they most graciously told me they would exchange it for the correct size. will strap up tomorrow and report back after the weekend. so far definitely a keeper!
also opened the southern trapper package- quite the presentation. fancy box, tissue paper then bagged in a velour bag like crown royal! turn out it was just the belt (again wrong size but my fault) and it is superb. the nicest finished belt i have received so far! wow- definitely dress belt high end appearance. i got notice that the rest of the order was in transit so i should get those next week. i have to give the belt an a+, even before i wear one.
sent email to rosen asking about tooled and exotic options. The first order received was very well made so i thought i would try another. Just got the fueled m&p from ed brown today. Its gonna need some leather too! off topic but will be later- gonna send a springfield sa-35 to nighthawk for their classic package. Another wolf in sheeps clothing when complete. Want something different for a high power holster, any ideas?
got to play with the sig 226 x5 and the ed brown fueled m&p metal. Fun fun. both need something nice for holster. Thinking drop leg for the sig, maybe a speed rig for the smith. Suggestions?
wore the rosen pancake with thumbreak today. it is so nice to wear a quality comfortable holster again. Wore it 4 oclock, couldnt tell i was carrying a steel commander. Tight as a tick but thats expected. Dont need to bag and draw, want it tight. When needed the gun will come out just fine thank you. Grading this one a solid A!
Got email back from rosen, looking at shell cordovan in whiskey or mahogany.
heard from jason winnie, settled on cognac full quill ostrich hide. He will send pricing next week, then we will either get started or move on.
Here's the Brown Elephant pancake he made for me. I think you will be pleased with the quality of his work and his design adaptation.

wearing the rosen crossdraw today. only comment so far is it needs a rear sweat shield to keep the safety from rubbing. they dont make it with thumb break but i went ahead and ordered it anyway- but wearing it now realize that may have not been a good idea. great holster and workmanship but without at least a rear sweat shield the thumb safety is exposed and subject to being pushed off and rubs the belly when I move. the comment on a different thread on belts is also true- all belts dont fit all holsters. since the rosen belt was too short i am wearing a bigfoot gunbelt with steel core. the holster slots are barely large enough to slide on the belt! while I like it it is not a keeper because of the safety issue. grading this holster a c- its nice and fits the gun but does not meet my other requirements.
When does the UrbanCarry get a review?
