Holster Trials

After the wilson experior commander fell out of my holster a few times last weekend, I decided to upgrade my leather. I ordered a few setups from each of the following: Kramer, Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen, Kirpatrick, and Southern Trapper. In the process of ordering from Overland, and plan on an black lizard rig from Andrews. Will post time from order to delivery, initial impressions, and longer term results. I ordered a pancake, double mag holder, crossdraw and belt from each. Also fell for the bbq rig from kirpatrick and a shark setup from milt sparks. Mt needs change from day to day, if in a vehicle or seated for a long time I wear the crossdraw. I do not like iwb at all, everything is owb for me! At the prices I had to pay I hope some of these are ideal.

When does the UrbanCarry get a review?
they dont. didnt order anything from them. cant order from everyone- my budget does have a limit! have gone mostly by recommendations, sometimes by aesthetics/design. have been going for more of a dress rig look to wear at work. will order more soon- will take another look at urban carry.
thanks
received the balance of the southern trapper order and the complete mtr leather order. again, the presentation of the southern trapper goods is over the top- deluxe box, each item bagged in velvet type drawstring bag, a thank you card and a card with qr codes that lead to instructions on break in and care. wow. just handing them i did notice that the leather is much thinner and lighter than the mitch rosen holsters. dont remember if i ordered horsehide for this but i will look it up. again the proof is in the wearing. and the crossdraw does have a thumbreak! but it has the ugly stiffening patch surrounding the top of the holster. i know what its good for but i still dont want it, i think its ugly. these are carry holsters, not for range or practice so i am not concerned with ease of reholstering. and with a thumbreak reholstering isnt happening quickly anyway. i though i specified no reinforcement strap but again i will look back at my order.
the mtr order came in standard retail type packaging- bagged in clear plastic with a cardboard label stapled across the top. the belt was loose so i have handled it. i chose shrunken bison, and it is gorgeous. not fair to go further until i can wear them so i will leave it there. will try to post pics in the morning.
finally completed the full quill ostrich order from jason winnie. kinda spendy, but what isnt these days? sent a healthy deposit to get things rolling. was given a loose timeframe of 6-8 months, with the crossdraw taking longer as it has to be designed from scratch. i asked for a lower cant for a couple reasons. first, when seated its easier to draw and more comfortable. second, when the butt of the gun is up high it catches on a desk when seated and moving around. sometimes i wonder if these guys actually wear their holsters?

They probably do, just not the model that a given individual ordered.

They have to satisfy a market to stay in business.

I'm sure they don't wear all the models regularly... they aren't desk jockeys, they are blue collar craftsmen... Everyone has a favorite and everyone has a design preference based on their own daily needs & movement. (or lack of)

I wish I could wear my preferred range holsters every day but my work attire doesn't always allow it. Some days I have to contend with executive chairs, desks, fitted & tucked in shirts and other stuff while the good days- working from home allow whatever I want.
i stand corrected, i spoke wrong. after thinking about it i realize most of the leathermakers i have been talking to wear their products. i was specifically referring to the crossdraw holster. some, including sam andrews, aidan at southern trapper, jason winnie, adam at overland (and a few others) have listened to my needs and wants and are making a holster accordingly. the rest- notsomuch. so there is custom, and semi custom. i want/need a crossdraw with at least 45 degree rake for seated use. many of the makers only do them one way, and i was frustrated when i posted.
my needs are unique, as is my opinion of the items i am reviewing. my needs have changed at this point in life too- i am more active at work than i am at home now. my daily routine varies greatly, as does my attire. this is why i am trying so many different styles. most of the gear i am buying is priced above where everyday folks would be comfortable, so these reviews wont do much for most. for those looking for higher grade leather gear some of my experiences and reviews may be meaningful. i am covering everything from ordering, ongoing communications, time to deliver and of course wearing the rigs and sharing my thoughts. take what you can, leave the rest.

called kramer to confirm receipt of adjusted belt size as i had not heard back from them. was told to make belt 5" longer it would cost double! Was also told that the price paid for was belt on the original order was incorrect- it should have been double what i was charged and paid too. i cancelled the belt portion- i dont want to pay more for horsehide than an exotic- $330 is just too much! dunno whats going on with horsehide but this is ridiculous! i have plenty of other gunbelts- i just wanted one that matched material and dye lot color.
called kramer back to make certain i heard correctly- yes the price would be $330 for the horsehide belt. lady on the other end was polite and professional, so i told her i didnt necessarily need a refund but i do need a couple of holsters. after a thorough discussion, avenger style holsters were ordered for the sig 226 xfive and the beretta 92 performance defensive. open top but with sweat shield, reinforced mouth for range/training use, fbi cant, low riding. a lateral move but it does take a couple off the to-do list. she did remind me of the 16-17 week wait time.
Horesehide: Well, we used to slaughter and part-out knackered horses... Folks whined.. Then they discovered they could completely wipe-out wild-horse herds - and folks got pissed..

So, instead of making sense and leaving the WILD alone, they went nutso and banned everything - the usual BS.

I wonder how illegal-alien tastes.. Rotisserie-style!
... kramer ... avenger style holsters ... open top but with sweat shield, ...
That'll be interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a Kramer Vertical Scabbard with a sweat shield.

it was a $20 upgrade. Ordered 3 different, should arrive mid july-august.

we have to live with bans now where i am.
not so good with posting pics, but here goes:
above is a montage of holsters from 3 different makers- rosen, mtr and southern trapper. the guns are a wilson experior commander, a tisas bantam commander and a dan wesson ecp. i tried to show side by side comparisons, front and back and a straight down view of holsters and mag holders. the rosen seems to be the highest quality, in gloss mahogany. the southern trapper in black is close behind. the mtr just isnt in the same leage. it is shrunken bison in peanut color. the mtr is the only crossdraw close to what i am looking for with a 45 degree cant. the others are too straight up. all fit well, with the mtr having the thickest leather panel on the backside making it feel softer when wearing. the rosen crossdraw without a thumbreak or side shield wont work for me and is looking for a good home. the belts from rosen and southern trapper were returned to be recut a longer size. mtr got the size change before making the belt. the rosen holsters have finer stitching, and are sewn around the belt slots, unlike others. the mag holders rate differently however, with the southern trapper the best followed by the rosen. size matters here, with the larger pancake being more comfortable. even though it does have the requested sweat shield the mtr mag holder doesnt measure up to the others in perceived quality of workmanship. it does not hold the mags as securely either. appearance wise the mtr bison gets the nod with its unique texture, but thats not really fair as the others were ordered in plain leather. my dislike of the rosen shinyness is noted above. these are just initial impressions from handling and takings pics. other than the rosen gear the rest havent been worn yet- which is where the rubber meets the road. the rosen wear rating is above. will update with wear reviews asap.

quite well. Smooth, accurate, reliable. First 500 rounds flawless. Tore down, inspected, cleaned, lubed and did it again. Second 500 rounds perfect. Very impressed. it is a keeper for the carry rotation!

the mtr pancake carried well. the thumbreak leather is a little loose, and doesnt lineup perfectly so reholstering one handed is a little fiddley. did get a few compliments on the bison leather though. deducting for the thumbreak. usuable but will keep me from ordering again. rated B, with extra credit for the hide appearance. will wear the crossdraw tomorrow and report back.
the mtr crossdraw holster did okay, with the 45 degree rake helping. again one handed reholstering difficult due to imprecise lineup of the snaps on the thumb break. i also think it could have benefitted with a stiffener in the holster between the outside belt slot and the main body of the holster- with the gun carried so far above the belt line it places a lot of torque on the holster causing it to twist slightly. i rate it B+. the belt however did not have a stiffener insert either and definitely needed it- the holster was very floppy with a lightweight commander in it. they should put stiffeners in both the holster and the belt, and redesign the holster to carry the gun somewhat lower in relation to the belt line. really like the hide and the color but this rig misses the mark for me. i rated the belt c+. overall rating for mtr based on the items i received and my experience wearing them- B-. next up- wear testing the southern trapper gear.
