Hi,

How do you guys carry/store your guns when:

1) you are in bed/sleeping
2) when you are home but awake, milling around, etc.
3) when you are out of the house
4) when you are going outside briefly to get the mail or take out the trash
5) when you have guests
and 6) when you answer the door?

Do you leave it cocked and locked, or condition 3?

I'm not paranoid, why should I be paranoid with all these guns around me?

Raspy, you don't have to answer, but I noticed you live out here in CA...do you have a CCW?

I don't, and being a full-time student it isn't worth losing my guns and tossed in jail if I get caught (felony to be on campus with a Kimber, me thinks).

My guns are my hobby, and never thought about defense, but if I have them, why not use them. At the moment, I never take them loaded out of the house.

At this point I live in an apartment on the second floor. The door is always locked!!! The bedroom is in the far back. I have a customized 870 sitting next to my bed. If there is any trouble I can make it to the bedroom and lock the door before someone can get up the steps (long stair case!!). When I walk outside, well, I live in NJ so I am screwed.

When I have guests it stays where it is. And when I have to answer the door I can see who it is from the top of the stairs.

The gun is always kept loaded with an open chamber and the safety on.

My apartment is built like a fortress where it needs to be. There is a solid concrete wall separating the bedroom from the living room. The only weak point is there isn't a heavy steel door to the bedroom. If I add that I don't think I could even design a safer place to live. Whoever built this place must have been paranoid. But I like it.
<><> Skunkabilly, yes I do have a CCW. I live in one of the northern most counties where we have people in office that believe in the constitution, and an individuals rights. I wish all counties were like this one. I lived in So. Ka. for a while, so I know the other side of the coin. I don't know about it being a felony carrying on school grounds. If you get caught carrying w/o a CCW, I believe it is a misdemenor the first time. There is a publication you might want to look at. Send two dollars with your name & address to, this includes S&H.

Ditto. Always concealed if anybody other than family is around, or I'm outside...well, except for the nightstand thing. Unconcealed there.
1 Bookcase next to my bed
2-6 Smartcarry arround my waist.

1) In the house sleeping

I have kids, 12 and 8, both "gun proofed" and both shoot .22 rifle. I keep all handguns in one of the R&D Enterprises safes under the bed. These babies are TOUGH. 3/8 inch steel bodies, 1/4 inch doors. I can swing my hand down from the lying position in the bed and have a gun in my hand in seconds. I highly recommend them. See www.handgunsafe.com for more info. (no, my brother-in-law doesn't own the company, it's just a really great, simple product that works).

If a gun is out of the safe, it's in my personal possesion. Carry depends on the gun. Taurus M85-CH 5-shot .38 snubby in Galco Ankle Glove, Safariland shoulder rig, or Kramer pocket holster. I'm thinking of getting a Ken Null minimalist for this. If Kimber Compact CDP, IWB holster or Galco Miami Classic, or just stuffed into my waistband. What the heck, it ain't goin' nowhere.

Cheers,

John Collins
When I'm carrying, it's a Glock or 1911 in either a Blade-Tech or KyTac Braveheart kydex IWB or paddle, or a S&W 640 carried various ways (great pocket gun doing yard/garage work etc). When I'm home and not carrying, the carry gun is loaded and holstered, inside a quick access (5 secs) pistol safe with Simplex pushbutton lock. Flashlight next to it. Kid and visitor proof, yet I can get into it instantly. Otherwise, all guns are in the big heavy safe.

Lock 'em up if they're not on your body! A new friend recently came home, and went straight to his garage shop. He heard his wife scream from inside the house... she had walked into the BR and found a burglar there. She grabbed his arm (not smart), and he turned and pointed her hubbie's gun at her (gotten from the night stand), and then fled. He (my friend) got lucky with that hard lesson... his wife could have been shot with his own gun.
