How do you......well, you know.

Since last Tuesday, I've started carrying concealed all the time. Now, for all you veteren carriers out there, what do you do when answering the call of nature? I've almost dropped my shootin' iron on the floor the first time I had to sprinkle the porcelin. Any wisdom out there?

I don't carry full-time (yet), but here's what I've been told in class. I'll toss it out and let those in-the-know tear it to shreds if need be:

1) Always use a stall and secure the door. Someone standing next to you at a urinal might go for your weapon.

2) Set your weapon (if you're sitting down) in your pants to prevent forgetting it on the coat hook, the floor, on the tank lid, etc. If it's in your pants you'll hear it hit the floor or feel it against your skin if you forget to retrieve it first. In cold weather, a Glock might be a good idea.

OK, enough newbie prattle. I'm looking forward to hearing from the cognoscenti on this.

How can anyone grab you weapon when you are standing at the urinal? Unless you are wearing thunderwear unziping your fly has nothing to do with a gun on your belt.

I usually wear a loose t-shirt, polo shirt, or light jacket over my Officers model and unziping my fly has never exposed my weapon (my .45 that is).

If I need to sit on the can I usually fold or tuck the top of my trousers in so that the weapon hangs on the inside. That way no one can see it under the stall door.

The above posts have it pretty well covered. When going to the bathroom, always stay in a high condition yellow. Why? At almost no other time are you so vulnerable.
Ditto MadDog. Only adder is be careful if you need to use a cramped-stall sitter(sp?), I dumped mine on the ground once (only once) while dropping trou. The (gun)butt hung on the TP holder while the pants went down...one of those Lomotil moments.

The reason for using a stall is not because of the possibility of a gun grab [gun should be concealed] it is because of the possibility of a goblin grabbing you by the back of neck/shirt/jacket and making you eat the wall in front of you.

Next, in the stall while taking a dump, DO NOT EXPOSE your gun. Lots of ways to keep the gun from being seen so you will have to experiment to find what works with you.

One question, why would anyone carry a gun part time?????

They come up behind you, pull your coat up, and grab the gun out of the holster. It's pretty easy to do when you're in the middle of a good whizz.

Simple. Always use a stall. A little care taken while either unzipping or lowering trousers should assure you that you won't drop your rod while holding your other rod.
A recent encounter to relate.
A couple days ago I went to a late movie.
I was the only one in the restroom after the movie and I did my business and exited the stall and two male teens were standing near the exit door of the restroom, talking to each other. Keeping track of them in my peripheral vision, I washed my hands and adjusted my clothing to make sure nothing showed. As I made my way to the door, the two looked at me and one said, "Do you have change of a $20 for the bus?" I said no and kept moving.
The other one said, "Do you have any change at all?" I stopped, and said in a loud voice...
"I TOLD YOU NO, I DONT HAVE ANY CHANGE!"
I wasnt shouting but I used the aggressive controlling voice I was taught to use in my defensive handgun course at Firearms Academy of Seattle. ( www.firearmsacademy.com )
Both of them stiffened and backed up and their eyes went rather wide and they stepped aside. I went out and watched my six as I got in my car and drove away.
I grinned as I imagined them telling their friends of the crazy white guy they ran into that night...

MadDog, I have no intention of getting into a discussion of the proper way to "siphon the python", but note that a small but noticeable percentage of men undo their belt and pants and zipper to whizz. For them, the question is legitimate, because it isn't just a zipper issue.

If God didn't want us to own guns, why did He make the 1911?
Great discussion! I love hearing real world explanations to data through which I have no experience to filter.

Excellent question. Simply put, I'm waiting for my VersaMax II holster from Milt-Sparks. Right now I only have a Blade Tech IDPA style holster (can't remember the name right now, sorry), and the sucker prints like a refrigerator taped to my hip when I stick my Gov't model in it and put on an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt. If I had half a brain, I would have ordered one much sooner to coincide with the time my CHL was due to arrive, but I don't, so I didn't.

Thanks again.

Well, I just modified the way I drain the rain gutter, so I just unzip the fly now. It seems easier to do this than to keep tension on the belt and aim all with the right hand. This is for the stand up job.

Thanks to Maddog for an efficient way to handle the sit down job. My Roscoe will stay hidden that way until the paperwork is done.

Boy, if it is a big issue just to unzip to urinate, imagine how much more trouble it is when you have to sit down!!!

Sorry, but I usually choose the handicap stall as it is often next to a wall and larger. I wear IWB and have to draw my gun before I drop my drawers, otherwise there will be a clatter on the floor. It is odd, doing your business or cleaning up afterwards and querying yourself as to when the last time you did your off hand shooting drills and just how well can you maneuver with your drawers around your ankles?

All rules apply in regard to treating your gun as it was loaded (always, especially in the john), know your target, backstop, and beyond, never cover anything you don't intend to destroy (remember that beyond the stall wall may be all the urinals or washing area), and keep your finger off the trigger!

Prudence suggests that if you don't feel safe or secure where you might need to do your business, then find somewhere else!

And remember that the grab or clinch action by one hand my cause a similar reaction in the other hand, especially if startled. That could have all sorts of bad repurcussions.
