What is a good all around first time rifle or shotgun for hunting?

I have been looking at the Howa M-1500 30-06. But thought maybe someone might have other recommendations.

the howa 1500 sounds good, for the shotgun i vote remington 870 in 12 gauge, with oodles of accessaries it can be adapted to any use or situation you can dream up.

I'm not familiar with the Howa. If I were starting from scratch, I'd get a Remington Model 7(Stainless, Laminated) in either 7-08 or 308. I don't hunt at ranges over 300 and prefer to get closer. Nor do I hunt bear. For a shotgun, I'd get a Beretta 686 Black Onyx with a 3 1/2 chamber.
