The house has renewed the Internet Tax Moratorium but the legislation has stalled in the Senate where four Senators, including one of mine Cantwell have put a hold on it under Senate rules.

If this doesnt get renewed by November 1 various state and local governments will immediately start taxing various internet services.

Without the moratorium the internet might not be what it is today, and without it in the future the internet might not become what it might yet be.

For fellow Washingtonians: Write/Email/Fax that fool Cantwell with a note to stop her nonsense with the hold on this bill.

I am a little confused as to whether this bill restricts taxing internet access, or internet sales tax, or both. What's the story? Not that I have a problem with restricting either one, or any taxes for that matter.

I believe it restricts taxing internet access and also prevents a state from charging people for sales tax when they order across state lines over the internet. It also prevents any jurisdiction to discriminate against certain types of internet businesses. Like say put a special income tax on internet casino winnings and so forth.

Anyways the bottom line is if it doesnt get renewed by November 1st its going to cause problems.

While sales tax cannot be collected on out of state sales, in California, a USE tax is due on any item used in California. The use tax percentage for some strange reason is exactly the same as our state sales tax rate.

We (California) are required to pay this use tax on items bought by mail, over then internet, or whatever if brought into the state.

I just hope they don't pass a federal sales tax for internet, out of state, purchases. i.e. in state, sales tax goes to state, out of state, sales tax goes to federal govt.
