Hi,

I'm thinking on building a 1911 with a bull barrel and ghost ring sights. This will most likely disqualify me from IDPA, but will it still be classfied as 'limited' in IPSC, or will I be in the open class?

You won't be allowed to shoot IDPA with a bull barrel that is for sure. :-( It will still be allowed in Limited or Limited 10 in USPSA.
Pretty much as long as you don't port the barrel or use an optical sight, you can shoot in limited USPSA. BTW remember that major in Limited class starts at .40 caliber.

Best of luck!

There's also a 500 piece rule that requires the use of guns or components produced by a factory and available to the general public for one year. Prototypes are specifically not allowed.

You can't change the caliber from factory standard.

No external devices to reduce or control recoil.

There's a mag length limit that will get you scored Open if you cross it.

Beyond the porting, compensators and optics, as Matt said, the sky's the limit in IPSC.
