Mine sits [either right or left] about 2-3 inchs to the rear of my hipbone. I am 6', 175lbs, and have a 34/35" waist. GLV
Everyone has to find their own 'sweet spot' for the holster. Mine is just behind my hipbone, but that means it is mostly lateral - almost in line with my arm. My buddy says the same thing, but his hip and weight differ and for him, just behind the hip bone means that the gun is carried more on the back side.

A gun placed too much on the side will end up making a protruding lump that resembles a tumor. You don't want that. So you need to find that special place where you have an indention or flab can compress and the gun can be worn comfortably as well as not being unsightly and still accessible.

Personally, I don't like guns worn too far to the back as they make for a very round about draw that is slower and more awkward than a more laterally placed holster. SOB (small of back) holsters (IWB or not) just don't seem to be a good tactical option unless you don't depend on the draw. That being said, there are those who are quite accomplished at such draws, but SOB is not quick and in most cases SOB and rear IWB result in the person scanning themselves with the muzzle of the gun during the draw.

If your gun is terribly small, say an officer's size or maybe something like a Colt Pony, you can carry in front of your hip. This option works well if you are in the car a lot and are worried about car jacking. It conceals well also, but not with an open vest since the gun is in front.

i carry my colt in a galco summer holster, i wear it on my right side, slanted forward just a bit. the reason i pick this spot to carry it is because i wear a gun in uniform all day long, and this way the gun is in the same place. this makes the reactive draw much faster.

CHANCE FAVORS THE PREPARED MIND....
Uh, any women want to reply on this one? Since we have actual "hips", the spot where GLV carries his would make a very noticeable change in shape.

I hate to say this , but I have spent several hundred dollars deciding what works for me.

And, it keeps changing.

Used to be real skinny. A Glock 19 was easy to conceal at the appendix carry under a loose T-shirt. Very quick and easy to draw from there too.
If you are a woman , with large breasts that would create drape of a covering garment, the appendix carry may be ideal. (I used to admire women w/ large breasts. Not because they had nice tomatoes, but because I thought , "Damn, lucky girls, they could conceal anything under a T-shirt."

Now that my waist line has ...uh...expanded shall we say. I carry strong side hip like most people seem to do.

I like the Bianchi Pistol Pocket in a radical cant. It has a geared mechanism, where you can adjust the cant and lock it in where you like it. This does not add to the thichness of the holster IMO.
Too, it has a thumb break. With practice, the thumbreak can be very fast, fast enough IMO. Last weekend , I was easily as fast as or faster than most other shooters who wore open top.

Stay safe,

I just recently "graduated" to 1911 type pistols a couple of months ago. I too really like the Bianchi 3S Pistol Pocket. You can change the cant to your liking, and for me, the thumb break really helped alleviate the newbie concerns I had about carrying "cocked and locked", which was very foreign to me since I had been carrying a DAO for several years. And........the Bianchi is readily available so you don't have to wait for weeks on end, and a decent price.
I carry my 1911 compact in pretty much the same place I have carried all my pistols-just behind the hipbone. I've made only slight adjustments due the varying degrees of cant of the different grips. At a recent training session a fellow shooter remarked how extremely well the full size 1911 I was using concealed in my IWB. It's just a matter of a good holster and finding the right spot and angle of carry. Stay safe.
After you find the "best" spot for you, you'll probably discover that you can't get there with all of your pants. It seems that most of mine have different layouts for the belt loops.

Well, not to get too personal, but I've got tomatoes of the beefsteak variety, but I couldn't imagine keeping my Kimber under there - especially in summertime. Things get hot and rather *sweaty* when you've got big tomatoes, and I'd worry about RUST!
