Jam session

Took out the Ria 10mm HC 16rd. 1911 to day. It sucked to say the least. I have 3 new factory mags. One of them ran ok (only jammed once), the other 2 were about 50% at best. The rounds jammed hard into feed ramp lip (see scratch on brass in pic). Just wondering if I want to mess with it or just sell it.
P.S. Feed ramp not the smoothest I've ever seen.

Sell it, someone will want to tinker with it.

First step that I would take would be to fill all three of the mags completely full. Let them set that way for a couple days or until you can shoot it again and see if that helps. Often new mags do better after getting the spring to set, perhaps more so with single stacks but I’d give it a try.

If the gun is also new, make sure it is well lubricated and perhaps a little ”wet”.

A few questions:
Is it new? If so, did you field strip it and wipe off the RIDICULOUS amount of lubricant RIA ships these with? I assume you would, but just had to ask. If not, did you field strip it and inspect/clean it thoroughly? That ramp doesn't seem to have seen much use, so I'm guessing new. Again, just had to ask.

What kind of ammo were you using, if more than one type/brand did any feed better or worse than the otheres? I have the same pistol and just put ~ 100 rounds of RNFP 180 grain (all LAX Ammunition) through it with nary a hiccup other than the slide not going fully into battery after the very first round. A sharp rap with the palm of my hand solved that.

How bad do you want/need a DS 1911 in 10 mm? RIA are a very affordable, reliable (usually) entry into this market that are built on solid, albeit heavy, frames. Nearly everyone on this forum has more experience in these matters than me, but RIA frames have a reputation here for being worthy of being a good base for a custom build. It might be worth sinking a few bucks into fixing the feed issue, it'll probably be less expensive than moving up to another DS 1911 10 mm platform.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm guilty! I ran it right out of the box. I'm going to clean it and I've had pretty good results from polishing feed ramps so I'll get back to you all. Hear is pic of scratch on round that jammed in pistol. the scratch is from sharp edge of feed ramp.

Mine was literally dripping when I examined it at the FFL. I know some say to run these wet, but there's wet, and then there's WET. Mine was the latter. I don't think that's your whole problem, but it can't hurt to get some of the excess lubricant off.

Gotta' love the ramp and chamber edges all sharp enough to slice your fingers. Always worth fixing that, (and your brass and bullets may thank you)

I wouldn’t polish on anything until I knew for sure the extractor is set up right, and that it has the proper chamfers for the cartridge to make it up under the extractor and on to the breech face smoothly!

S&B 10mm is affordable and I have shot it too, so no judgement from me, but I wouldn’t rate any 10mm‘s reliability based on S&B.

How inconsistent is it? A few personal examples: whatever primers they use are so hard that a stock S&W 610 won’t ignite them. Depriming them when reloading will break decapping pins regularly. A dead nuts reliable Colt Delta Gold Cup suddenly develops the odd habit of not being able to push them up the feed ramp.

See if you can score Federal, Winchester or Armscor and give your new gun another chance.

Do all of the above. Clean and lube, check extractor tension, load mags and let them sit at least several days.. RIA extractors are not very good quality. I replace mine with egw.

Proprietary double stack mags can sometimes suck outright.
I had the same gun and after 2 years 3 trips back for warranty work it has never been able to fire 1 round it now sets in my safe until it gets its final calling for its only purpose an expensive paper weight and don't even try to deal with RI warranty dept they call you filthy names and lie their asses off
I would definitely take some Flitz polish to the barrel feed ramp. Also, a thorough cleaning & lube job of the pistol to remove the shipping/corrosion inhibiting substance Armscor/RIA applies to their products to survive the trip across that saltwater pond.

Your pistol; do as you want, but it only takes a minute to look at the extractor with the slide off!

Need a loaded round sitting on the breech face with the rim under the extractor. The hook should have a sliver of daylight between it and the rim?! Does the front of the hook make contact with the bevel ahead of the rim—if it does, no good?! There should be enough tension on the wall (inside of the hook end of the extractor) against the rim to hold it in place if you turn it upside down and wave it a little?!
Does the extractor sit square in relation to the slide and breech, or is it clocked?! Is there brass accumulating on the chamfered edges of the extractor?!
Take a look at some of the extractor threads that have been posted by Theraptur, Ruffdup, and Steve in Allentown—they will have examples, and links to Steve’s Extractor Tune.
What you are describing, I’ve seen with out of tune extractors. You can polish the bejeesus out of the feed ramp and you’ll only get the ramp out of spec. It looks like a mirror already from your photos. I’d eliminate an extractor issue first. Just did this rodeo with my Tisas Service Model which was nose diving. First thought would be the ramp, but it had nothing to do with it. The rim couldn’t slide up onto the breech face, and the slide had no where else to push it but down!

Is the hook bottomed out / touching brass in the groove of the rim (fig.1), or is the wall / inside portion of the extractor pushing against the out side edge of the rim, as should be the case (fig. 2)?
Sorry for the primitive drawings, but I can’t take detailed enough photos to illustrate this. Theraptur has a good photo of what a proper extractor looks like right now on another thread. The pressure on the cartridge needs to be against the rim, and not the hook pressing against the bottom of the groove—if this makes sense?
Handwriting Font Rectangle Art Writing

The actual hook should have a sliver of air around it—shouldn’t be touching anything by a few thousandths. Only the outside edge of the rim should make contact with the Wall / Inside portion of the extractor.

P.S. go to Gunsmithing and Troubleshooting and find Theraptur’s “Another Extractor Tuning Example.”
He’s got really good photos of what your extractor should, and should not, look like.
Would really like to see you get that 10mm running like a sewing machine!
