Former judge gets 18 months in prison for firearms
AUSTIN -- A former Williamson County court-at-law judge charged with peddling firearms was sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years probation Friday after he pleaded guilty in May to two of nine felony counts.
Prosecutors told Judge Sam Sparks they agreed to a plea deal based on several factors, including the 70-year-old Tim Wright's lack of criminal history, his dedicated public service and his poor health.
They also said punishment is needed because the crimes weren't a one time mistake, that Wright lied repeatedly on documents about who the guns were for.
Wright addressed the court explaining that a hunting accident and botched surgery lead to depression, and a traumatic brain injury. He added he got into gun dealing and got in over his head because it was a new passion he could cling to.
Wright Is charged with seven firearms violations and two counts of making false statements to government agents. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms searched Wright's home in March 28, 2015. They seized 51 guns, a truck and more than $42,000, according to the indictment.
In May, Wright pleaded guilty to dealing firearms without a license and lying to federal agents. He admitted to selling guns to people with criminal records and lying to investigators throughout the course of the investigation. Federal officials say two buyers illegally smuggled some of those weapons to Mexico.
He resigned from the bench just after pleading guilty.
A point of information to all you that love to blame democrats and call them names. Judge Wright was a Rebuplican from a very conservative county, Williamson County, in Texas where they love strick law and order.
