can anyone tell me whos beavertail safety will fit the kimber frame?i know ed browns will not.i want to get my hand up higher the stok one is just to thick.
I'm having the same problem too. Anyone know what high ride beavertail, prefferably with memory groove fits on the kimber frame wihtout fitting. I really would hate to cut into a new kimber if there is a drop in available.
There's no such thing as a beavertail grip safety that you can "drop in" to your Kimber and have it work as well--and fit as well--as you'll get through a smith.
Grip safeties come in two radius cuts (referring to the necessary cut made to an original frame tang), a .250" radius and the "Clark/Wilson Compound" radius.
IIRC, Kimber uses the Clark/Wilson radius while Springfield uses the .250"...
Ok, so once I fit the BT and contour the frame to it, I'd need to redo the black oxide finish. What exactly is that finish? Sounds like some kind of parkerizing.
Their website says it isn't. How the heck would I refinish it then? ...and what the heck is black oxide? The guy at the gun shop said it was some kind of park. A paint on finish maybe? That isn't really what I had in mind when I bought it. Why would they use a stainless frame anyway?
So, in other words, when they run out of frames, they start using stainless ones because they figure that they're going to cover them up with their black oxide stuff anyway...great. So what is black oxide? Is Kimber the only one who could refinish a black oxide frame? I'd go with another finish but what would go on a stainless frame? What about boron carbide? Will that go on stainless? I want the frame to match the slide but I'd rather not refinish the whole gun if I don't have to.
Strike, first determine what frame material you have. Take some cold blue and apply it to a bare spot on the frame rail. If it turns blue you have carbon steel.
good point, Vandal, one I hadn't considered... I have absolutely no hands on experience with their II series... Though I would suspect one could alway remove the "excess" parts. The FP safeties do not make the pistol more safe in any reasonable argument compared to the non-II series pistols.
My gunsmith told me that the bt on the type II Kimbers is essentially a series 70 bt.
