Kimber Grips

758 4
Just got a set of replacement grips for my Tactical Pro II (finish on original grip on rt panel chipped because grip screw was cross-threaded from the factory). Have to say they're some of the poorest checkered and finished grips I've seen. I'm comparing to Wilson replacements for full-sized frames and they're not even on the same planet (and the Wilsons are $5 cheaper!). Kimbers look almost like they had no finish; I may put an oil finish over them, but my impression is really shoddy workmanship also - checkering overruns, flats, irregular diamonds, skipped areas - LOTS. This is not even an issue of "you get what you pay for." Wilsons are nice, attractive, well-finished grips, and cheaper than Kimbers; not Esmeralda quality, but nice. Kimbers looked like they were outsourced to a Taiwan furniture factory, and not a good one. Forgive the rant, but this is just poor business; I'm tired of paying for Kimber's CFO's vacation time. I wanted factory originals to preserve the look of the Tactical, but I may recant. OTOH, they are an honest advertisement these days for Kimber quality apparently, and are evident for all to see on the firing line...:hrm: May try to post some pics later...

Photos don't really do justice to the poor workmanship, and these aren't great pics, but represent the general idea. The photos also don't show clearly that there's almost NO finish on these - calling them bare wood would be generous (I applied a layer of carnauba). I don't expect Purdey quality, but man, I could've done better with my Dremel!

Mine don't look much better either on my Tac Pro. I really never thought I would consider buying a $2000 pistol but after looking at some Wilsons, Baer's and Nighthawks side by side with the Kimbers you can see the difference in quality, although twice the price. I do love my Kimber but it's not exactly perfection if you know what I mean.
