Bought a Czech VZ-24 that came with the usual accessories, among which was a leather sling. It's in surprisingly good shape, with little or no signs of use or wear. However, it's very stained and grimy. What's a good way to clean this thing without causing any deterioriation?

I would try Saddlesoap.

When using Saddlesoap get enough onto a clean and very damp lint free cotton cloth to work up a good lather - then just wipe it down with another clean damp cloth and dry at room temperature. Don't count on getting out any or all staining, but it should clean off anything that will come off without using anything solvent based. A good coat of Renaissance Wax after it dries will protect it very well after that.
