I have a Colt Commander and a Sig C3 and I need to buy some extra magazines. I have read that some mags can scar the feed ramp and I should only use mags with followers that are designed to prevent forward movement of the follower as the cartridge is stripped off. I bought the Commander used and I do see some light marks that seem to support this theory.

I also like using the X-grip and an 8 rd mag on the C3, so I need a flat/regular floor plate, which would also work for the Commander.

Thanks for helping the clueless.

The only mags I would avoid are those using the Devel follower. I'm sure there are other's, but the best known are those from Chip McCormick. If you like McCormick's mags, and they do have a good reputation, their PowerMag + has a follower that is aluminum frame friendly.

I wouldn't worry too much about anything else, though if you are extra cautious, Wilson, Tripp, ACT-Mag, and CheckMate with their CheckMate Patented Follower (CMF) for sure won't damage your frame.

Anything without a Devel follower (i.e., Chip McCormick Power mag-style follower) will work fine, but after trying the new Wilson ETMs and ETM HD (for carry), I am hooked.

I know you said you need a flat floorplate, but if you try to use the same mags in both guns just to allow use of the X-grip on the C3, you're sacrificing reliability in the Commander. If you're set on using the same mags in both guns, I guess you could go with Checkmate for a decent flush-fit 8 rounder, but I would encourage you to reconsider because of spring fatigue issues with cramming 8 rounds in a 7-round magazine tube. Even if you go with the CM for the C3, maybe pick up an ETM or 2 for the Commander. Here are some links for your reference. Good luck!

I guess I didn't clarify things well. I won't be using the same magazines in both pistols.

I think I will try the McCormick Powermag+ for the Commander. For the C3, a flat based standard magazine works best with the X-Grip. I use it because I find the officers length grip makes it hard for me to get a consistent grip going for accuracy when drawing and firing. The X-Grip gives me a nice grip and a 9 round capacity.

Today I saw that X-Grip makes a 2 piece model for that is made for base pad magazines.

I have used 8 round magazines for years and they stay loaded 24/7, but I have not had any feed problems due to spring tension.

Thanks very much; you solved my problem.

Happy Holidays.
