I have a variety of good production 1911s, nothing real expensive, but nice ones. In fact I've reached the limit of what I can justify in my own mind. I know that number is different for people and some guys own way more than I do.

It's been fun to have personal experience with most popular brands. However, recently, I've been thinking about selling most of them and just focusing on one brand, e.g., Dan Wesson perhaps. Or maybe just own two or three custom 1911s.

Does anyone else think like this? Or is it just my OCD struggling to reduce the total number?

I sometimes get the urge to do the same thing with my handgun collect. However, every time I do and then take a look at what I would sell, the answer is none of 'em. Each has a special keep it reason. It helps that for about half my collection I branched out to other makes to scratch my itch...makes like my Smith PC Bobtail scandium, my 2 Dan Wessons (PM-9 and ECO), and my all time dream gun, the .45ACP Les Baer Commanche Heavyweight Monolith.

If I were to start all over again, knowing what i know now, I would have a much more diverse group of pistols (6 of my handguns are all Kimbers) but, as I said previously, I'm good with what I have. And I know that I'd eventually regret selling any that I have...kinda like regretting selling your first car or girlfriend.

I have been trading off and upgrading for years.

I like it and I get to own and shoot many different brands.

I am almost settled in on what I have now. ;-)

I don't regret selling my first girlfriend one bit. I really needed the money and it was her or a gun I really liked. She was kinda mouthy anyway.

I have been thinking the same thing. I just made arrangements to sell my Sig P238. Loved the gun, but I don't like the caliber. If I want 6 + 1 shots, I will carry my SA Micro and get it in .45. I am going to sell my GSG 1911-22, also. I just do not shoot it enough.

Then, depending, I may sell 2 others to fund a higher end 1911. Maybe a DW or WC.

The Sig will be my first gun sold. Gave 2 to friends, but never sold one yet.

I do a similar thing. I really want to buy a 1911 in every caliber. It makes no practical sense what so ever, but it is a goal and I must achieve it. Not sure what I will do when I accomplish it though.... maybe buy ammo for them all lol.

Tango - Sounds like our collections are similar including six Kimbers with others. And you're right. I have a long list of guns I wish I'd kept. But I'd need a lot bigger safe. On the other hand, it's tough to replace a Clack.

Chudbrew - I've thought the same thing. I have 1911s in .22, .45, and 10mm. And I'm trying to figure out how to get a PM9. And then I saw a nice Colt in .38 super. And did you know they made 1911s in .357 mag? Maybe I will sell a...uh, uh, something. I think I need help!

I happen to have the .357 magnum.

I have a .45, and a .357 magnum Coonan. I just purchased a Pointman from Tombstone Tactical for $1400. I have a Fusion .38 super on order... should be here next month. I also have a Colt .380 which is styled after the 1911. I need help too lol!

I started with a bunch of revolvers and now have zero, bought some s&w 9mm autos.. now gone. I am left with three glocks , two hk's nine sig's and some 1911's. I think I may dump the glocks and maybe five sigs... so six guns besides 1911's . I would buy two 1911's with the money from from the stuff I sell. I would be fine with that.

If I could start over I would buy an hk usp in 40 and a sig 229/ 239 and 220 carry and maybe five high end 1911's and be done. I think Wilson baer brown and a custom from hienie and a springfield pro... 20 grand , maybe 22. would have been a lot cheaper, but I also have gotten quite an education along the way.

Well here is my story... I started my 1911 career with several low-mid tier guns, and then saved up and sold off for a collection of Dan Wesson guns. I then sold those off for a slightly smaller collection of Nighthawk Custom pistols.

Then, life caught up with me. I sold the Nighthawks, and have been slowly replenishing with Dan Wesson pistols (a VBOB and Specialist).

Looking back on it all now - I would only buy DW. Save the rest for leather and ammo.

Absolutely, Stanhou! The numbers for different 1911s is mind boggling. And I, too, have the same safe problem.:biglaugh:

To all: typo-- I never sold girlfriends. I meant "golfheads".:dope:

I have thinned out the herd quite a bit. I only have 2 handguns and 5 rifles now. Owning a bunch of 1911's doesn't make much sense to me even though I love them so much. I just focus on being very proficient with the 7 guns I have now. 1 1911 is all I need.

Custom2 - would I be safe in assuming that 1911 is a Kimber Custom II?

Understand your dilemma.
Started that way myself ‘cause didn’t know what I wanted and these forum guys seemed to do that. After 5 new pistols and the itch continuing, bought a Les Baer PII carry whatever the name.
Boy is it sweet. Shoots like a dream, so outclasses me it is ridiculous.
Discovered I am a shooter, not a collector. And believe I need to be proficient in whatever guns are used for protection. Using IDPA and UPSPA to become proficient. After shooting a bit, discovered a dislike for 9mm. The CZ guns are good and accurate, just want something bigger bore.
Decided to focus on my WC Colt LWT commander and the 5” Les Baer, both in 45. Both are superb and will outlast me. And keeping good with just those two guns plus work, wife, kids, and grandkids is a full time job for the rest of my life. Any more pistols right now would just become safe queens or time/money holes, neither of which I want.
