Mec-Gar Quality Mags?

I'd like to hear about those who use or have used Mec-Gar magazines. I know that Mec-Gar has contracts with many firearm producers for magazines.

I am interested in info on their 1911 mags.

I got two Mec-Gars with a Charles Daly that I bought about a year and a half ago. In my experience they fed hardball as well as anything else, but the gun or the mags constantly choked on hp's. I got a couple of Chip McCormick shooting stars and it seemed to help alot. Metalform also makes good magazines, and of course Wilson Combat are the apex of 1911 mags. Just my .02.

From my experience you can tell quite a bit about Mec-Gar magazines by the material they are made from and the price. Mec-Gar magazines made from stainless steel generally tend to be very high quality, at least the few I have are. Its the low cost ($13 8 round) blue magazines that tend to be of lower quality. The weak part of these magazines is the feed lips, which tend to bend down after repeated use and ultimately break after serveral attempts to bend them back.

It you stick with the stainless magazines you should be okay. If you have problems with these be sure to post it so we will know.

I hope this helps.

I've been using a Mec-Gar 11-round .45 mag for about five years, and it has worked perfectly. One of the feed lips cracked last year, but the mag is still working fine. It has fed hardball, flat points, SWC, etc., and always locks the slide back. Good mag.
I have one 7-round stainless that has never failed. I plan to buy more soon.
I dont use the Wilson mags because I dont like the plastic follower. I do use the McCormick Power Mags and they are great. I have two dozen now and have never had one fail to feed or lock the slide back when empty. All of my 1911's are Colts and one old Essex and who knows what else parts gun.

And how many cats how you have?
just kidding, I have a good number of mags myself.

I agree with you on the Wilson followers, I don't care for them either. I've had good luck with the CMC Shooting Stars. I like the welded base plate (no worries about it flying off), but the follower on an empty mag tends to slip forward a bit - this is a little troubling.

Seems I read the Power Mags don't have the follower problem, but IIRC the base plates are removable. Do they make a welded plate Power Mag?

I'm considering using my SS as range mags and getting 3 Power Mags (or 12) for carry. Whaddya think?

I've got four that came with my Charles Daly adn have never had a problem with them. The spring is funny looking, but the steel follower is nice. I'll just have to see how they hold up over time. These will feed anything I load in them.

I end up getting new followers from Wilson every 10 months or so for the mags I use in competition. I just e-mail them the quantity and they usually get new followers to me in 4 days.
I have 7 for my Kimber UC (6 shots) and they work perfectly. Great mags for $9.
They are good magazines or they wouldn't be building mags for most of the gun manufacturers in the world. I have many of them and they work just fine. In fact they make them for my Keltec P-32 and they function great...7th

I changed my 1991-A1 to shoot 45 Super by putting in a 32 lb. recoil spring and some other mods. If a mag misfed and the round hung on the feed ramp, that recoil spring would jam the bullet 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back into the case. It also destroyed a Shooting Star 10-rounder. The only mags to continue to be able to feed under that 32 lb. spring, besides my Wilsons, were a stainless Mec-Gar and a gun show used GI mag. 8 other mags, including the factory Colt mag, could not keep up with the Wolff 32 lb. spring.
Have been running with Mec-Gar 7 Rd. stainless mags in a Kimber full size and 6 round stainless Ultra Compact.
Have not had any failure to feed's.
MEC Gars are the only mag to be 100% failsafe in my 1 yr old Kimber Custom Target. Usually run 200+ in an outing,
Have tried Wilson 7 + 8 rnds, Powermags, Shooting Stars. All gave me proglems with ejects and FTF, usually on last round.

This Kimber just works best with Mec Gars, it was the original mag that came with the pistol, too.
Have 10 Mec-Gars for my Vickers 9mm Govt model..They work flawlessly..Feed ball and Hydrashocks with no problems...

Funny-I run a few Mec-Gars in my 9mm commander, and the feed angle or something is off in about half of them. Affects ejection and stovepipes the last empty as it ejects all too often. Could be an extractor problem, but I think the last found is ticking the follower...Doesn't do that with the Colt mags, though.

Finally someone who has had similar Shooting Star problems in their Kimber Target.

I like them! Strong springs, and they even form the edge so it wont bang into the mag catch, IMAGINE THAT! They are ahead of most if not all the big shot mag makers on that one.. -Gilmore

I like my 8 rd. Med-Gar blued mags in my Sistema. They feed 230 gr. HydraShoks reliably.

However, the configuration of the magazine base plate will not allow me to mount a magwell on my pistol.
"Mec-Gar" not "Med-Gar". Oops.
Does Kimber still use Mec-Gars? Odd, the mag that came with my Gold Match didn't work well at all, but some aftermarket Mec-Gars I got from my dealer have been very reliable. Are there different types of Mec-Gars?
