Mike's Super Commander -- Pics

I finally got Mike’s Super Commander done…Some of you may remember the pics he posted of it a few months back. It is a 50’s vintage LW commander in 38 super. It was in real nice shape. It did however have some really nasty tool marks all over the frame. Otherwise really nice.

It has been checkered 30lpi on the frontstrap. Ed Brown safeties, extractor , hammer, guide rod and mainspring housing (also 30lpi). Novak bar dot night sights. McCormick trigger, Ahrends grips and Nowlin Barrel. I also cut serrations on the top of the slide and a French border. The frame has been mil spec hardcoat anodized and the slide and small parts blued.
I had a lot of trouble getting some good pics. ( lighting, lighting, lighting) Mr. Nagata has nothing to fear from me!!! I hope you guys like it!!

Well, I don't see a whole lot wrong with your photography.

Really nice-looking gun. Really. (Too bad it isn't in a manly caliber.

Scott,
Good lookin' gun! Hurry up and send it to Mikey, so I can see it

I feel your pain in regards to taking a pic that looks like to want it to. Some of these guys must have a little mini studio set up in their shop. Your pics look very good, but I bet you took a bunch to get these "keepers".
Regards,
John

Scott,
Like I said on the other forum. Mike will trash that good looking gun in a couple of days. So you better send it to me and I'll take good care of it. I'll keep it away from plastic and only carry it in Milt Sparks leather.
Yet another Beauty Scott and Mike. 'Bout time for another safe Mike?
Scott,
You're spoilin' him!

Can you post some pictures of the top of the slide? I would like to see the work you did there.
Thanks, Bill

Scott, The more I look at the "before and after" pics, the more I'm impressed on what a great job you did on that gun. It really came out nice.....
Thanks for all the kind words. You guys should really go a little easier on Mike. How many guys would let you take thier new gun to a match and let every body else shoot it before you even held it.

Here you go Bill

Lookin' good, Scott. Can I ask who you had do the anodizing? Wierd, I also just completed a '50's vintage Commander but the serial number was quite different from the one in your pics... (LW 3XXX). Checkmate did a great job on the anodizing except for some really bad blemishes for which there is no repair. I'm working on them now to at least get the job at n/c. The blueing on the slide has some white spots in the cocking serrations.... and they lost five parts! They found the parts and I should have them tomorrow, but they haven't yet really stepped up on the flawed finish job. Lost parts I can understand. A flawed finish I can understand, but not sending it out that way, especially without a discussion.

Anyhoo-- see you at the end of the month, Berrien Springs and pins?
Ned,
Just goes to show you cain't teach an old dog new tricks. I have not dealt with that company in years, and would not even if my only option was K-Mart spray paint. Poor quality, dinged checkering, very poor response to problems with their work.

Scott,
Very, very nice work! I too would like to know who did the anodizing and bluing.

I used a commercial plater in Toledo. He had never done a gun before. I had seen some of his commercial work, top notch. I am not sure if he is looking for more gun work and I have no established track record with him so, I will refrain from posting his name at this time. I was very pleased with the job he did. And the 8 day turnaround. I will use him again. And if he is willing I will post his name.
I do my bluing in house. I have had to much of my hard work trashed by sending it out. I don't take bluing jobs, just blue my jobs.
And Ned , I will be there....Timers ready....Guns on the rail...........

Back when I was building guns, I also had a problem with Checkmate. They lost parts and the hardchrome job rusted from handling within 2 days of receipt. They finally stepped up with a refinish, still blaming the owner for improper handling of the gun. Never did get the parts or funds to replace.

Ned, can't anodizing be stripped and redone?
Yes, but I hesitate to go through all that, and the blems are actual pits, like something kinda blew out of the frame material, trapped gas or something. They are showing some interest in making it right and I feel I need to give them every chance to do so-- but it is a heartbreaker to put all into a gun and have it come back that way. I sent it back down for the guy to get a look at, not necessarily to redo. If he can convince me that he can do it over and make it look better at no risk, I might let him do it. But they are pits-- metal is gone. I have to admit, when I first opened the box they seemed huge-- now they seem smaller-- a change in my perception as the shock and dismay wear off, I guess. I sent another job down with it to see how they do. I have not had bad luck with them before, but don't have oodles of experience with them either. Like you, Scott, I have a local guy who does most of my chrome, not a guy who is interested in doing other gun work, but he does it for me. I had a local guy who did great blueing and was close enough for comfort, but Agent Orange took him (I think). Had another, retired local gunsmith who used to fire up the blueing tanks just for me but now he's really retired. I do have a local anodizer who said he'd do my guns but I haven't had a chance to test him on something... less important (like for myself).

I got the missing parts back today-- the sear pin was.... not a sear pin, the mnspg hsg retaining pin was somebody else's. I don't care about the pins-- the most important part, the T-slotted-in feedramp insert came back, praise Allah!

Nicely done, Scott. Very clean. Do let us know if your anodizer decides to 'get busy'.

A note on Checkmate - Horace Booth and Sheryl Howard 'parted company' several months back. Horace is no longer co-owner or affiliated with Checkmate, and has opened his own shop: Ford's, 4434 E.Arlington St., Suite 12; Inverness,FL. 34453 www.fordsguns.com
