A friend of my Dad's (an infantry major during WW2) carried his personal M1911 .38 Super in combat during WW2 so the answer to your question on "used by" is technically yes. But I'm sure just about any variation of the M1911 ever produced has seen combat somewhere in the world.
I recall that M1911s in .38 Super were purchased by the US Army during WW2. Various claims made as to why. Availability is the probable reason as the ammo was and is "non standard."
